Almost misleading in the title, but okay enough for what it presents.

This book is less concerned with actually solving numerical PDEs and discussing the methodologies behind how we develop the methods we use to approach them (which, for an ever growing field, is an absolute necessity) than it is in tackling the analytical background behind boundedness, iteration schemes, geometry, and basically the problem itself.

To be simpler, the idea in this book is more "These are the conditions in which we can develop a numerical scheme, and this is a good numerical scheme to use given the conditions" than it is "This is how we develop a numerical scheme."

Which is a useful topic, but unfortunately if one tried to apply this to, say, a typical program or course in Computational Fluid Dynamics, well, this book can be completely skipped and one can come out of said program or course knowing more about contributing to research in numerical methods (in general, not just with applications to fluid dynamics) than this book could ever provide.

HOWEVER.

For the person who is fully aware of the nature of some problem and wishes to find some numerical scheme to come up with, say, a quick presentation of efficiency in how said problem's solution accurately reflects a given model or physical data, then this book is pretty good for that, but I'm convinced you can find a better book elsewhere. It just seems too narrow a focus. For that, I agree with the other reviewer who described topics as "ad hoc."

On the other hand, this book is pretty demanding. Presentation is not entirely clear and a strong knowledge of PDEs and analysis (more aligned with mathematical analysis than a typical student's first few semesters in numerical analysis) are largely assumed.

In summary, this book is more about the nature of PDEs and the existence of numerical schemes than actually constructing schemes. Yes, construction is done, but it's so glossed over it seems more of a footnote. And the focus is too narrow to be readily accessible for someone looking for some ideas into numerical PDE methods.

If you're a student just taking a class, fine, whatever. But if you're someone who for some reason has stumbled into something that needs to be solved and you're looking for insights into how numerical analysts approach PDEs, go somewhere else.

Newer is not necessarily better.

This book could be viewed as an abridged/updated version of the classic earlier text by the author. However, it has significantly less content than the earlier book. I'm not sure what to make of this book. No overall consistent theme. Some topics treated in an ad-hoc manner. The book is ok if you already know the material, but I can see that it would be difficult and confusing for a beginner in this field.

It appears to me that this book was written in order to remove all of the rigorous mathematical details of the Richtmyer and Morton book on Finite Difference Methods. I would not use this as a text for any course in numerical PDE. As strange as this may sound, books on CFD tend to do a better job at numerical analysis but a poor job at CFD! I would shop around until you find something you feel comfortable with. This one just doesn't do it for me.

Good Starter

This book is a good starter for understanding how to numerically solve (Partial Differential Equations)PDE's. The chapters are arranged in an orderly manner and hints are provided then and there so that you wont need to switch back and forth between them. I myself a researcher in the field of Finite Element Analysis, which extensively involves PDE's for implementing the Finite element model. A thorough knowlegde of PDE's and the nature of their solutions is very important for such fields. This book is definitely the one which describes the nature of PDE's solutions and their interpretation, boundedness and applicability.

A Deadly Serious Game in Two Acts

The middle aged Andrew Wyke, a successful author of English country house murder mysteries, is an obsessive player of games, games of deductive logic, inductive logic, semantics, mathematics, hypnosis, and prestidigitation. Milo Tindle, the young lover of Andrew's wife Marguerite, has cautiously accepted an invitation by Andrew to his house.
Anthony Shaffer's play Sleuth opened to rave reviews in London in February, 1970, with Anthony Quayle and Keith Baxter in the lead roles. In the film production by Palomar Pictures Production and Twentieth Century Fox the roles of Andrew Wyke and Milo Tindle were played by Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine.
Sleuth makes fascinating reading on several levels. The setting, an English country home, initially suggests a predictable English mystery. However, despite some elements of humor, the disguised rivalry between Wyke and Tindle gradually develops overtones of a psychological thriller. Like Tindle, the reader is uncertain whether Wyke is simply playing a game, or whether he has more serious intentions. Obsessive game playing and make believe appear to be metamorphosing into a dangerous reality, but who is the victim? The plot is highly unpredictable and it would be inappropriate to say more.
The dialogue is fast paced and witty. Sleuth is entertaining, suspenseful, and great fun.

At once odd and familiar, a great recommendation.

The one extremely odd thing about this play was the fact that it was more of an entertainment than anything else, which is something that the old, stodgy theater would highly frown upon. Actually, though, it comes across as more of a breath of fresh air in a profession which is breathing its last in the public eye. The story twists and weaves almost too much to keep track of, but ostensibly this is the story of a young foreign gentleman in England who is visiting an older native. The older man has called him over to talk about a concern. The younger man (Milo)is getting married, and it turns out that the woman in question is the older man's ex-fiancee. What starts out as a polite inquiry into the Milo's finances suddenly turns ugly, as his elder intends to scare him. The two become embroiled in a psychological battle of scares and pranks up until the unexpected ending of the play. The key words here are Reversal of Expectation, taken almost to ludicrous extremes but always clear and understandable. The dialogue is quick, clever, and entertaining, and the characters are memorable. Best of all, this play can be performed easily on a budget and with a limited cast and crew; the script is that undemanding. The only thing you should consider bringing to the table here is an experienced director and two very talented actors.

Wicked Fun!

For my money, playwriting is probably the most difficult writing there is.

Unlike a book, you don't have the luxury of being able to use a lot of words or a lot of time and yet somehow in the scant pages allowed to you, you're expected to:

1) Introduce the characters

2) Introduce the story

3) Move both along consistently and

4) Bring about a satisfying ending while providing entertaining dialogue with no wasted scenes.

It's a huge order and yet Anthony Shaffer delivers. In this story we meet Andrew Wyke a stodgy Britisher who's wife is having an affair with the other character, Milo. Unlike Wyke Milo is young and verile. He's dashing and bigger than life but shorter on brains.

Or is it that we only think he's shorter on brains.

As Shaffer develops the story he naturally develops the plot and his characters in a way that we find both satisfying and believable.

It's wicked fun and well worth reading or seeing.

About the Author
St. Bridget of Sweden was a mystic and author born in 1303 at Uppland. One of the six patron saints of Europe, she married at the early age of thirteen and bore eight children, one of whom was later canonized as St. Catherine of Sweden. She was a distinctly noble and charitable woman, earning her a wide level of popularity, and also maintained good religious influence over her husband, Ulf Gudmarsson. Bridget later founded the Order of the Holy Savior, and also experienced visions of Mary and the Christ Child. She died on the twenty-third of July, 1373, after having written various prayers and popularizing the well-known Fifteen Prayers of the Lord's wounds. St. Bridget was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1391.

Revelations of St. Bridget

The book is absolutely amazing. If anyone is trying to increase their knowledge on this subject, this book is a must. As a novice to this subject, (and without trying to give the enjoyment of reading the book away)I did not know that St. Bridgets writings were actually in three persons (that of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary and herself). The writings are spiritually uplifting and I highly recommend you reading this.

A Guide to Spiritual Improvement

The Revelations of St. Bridget is a very unique and inspiring book. It provides important insights into the Passion of Our Lord and the life of Mary, which insights give excellent material for meditation, and, therefore, are a help to one's spiritual development. Our Lord has told many saints that meditation on His Passion is the best way to improve one's spiritual life. The Revelations is a wonderful guide on the road to spiritual improvement.

"Revelations of St.. Bridget"

This could be a most interesting book, except that is ,merely a short, devotional book of EXCERPTS from the original, NOT the entire "Revelations of ST. Bridget". SO if you're looking for a complete book lookk elsewhere than TAN Publications, at least, at LEAST until they start mentioning books are really excerpts from books, books are abridged etc. As it is, I now have to search for an entire copy again.

Funny guide to change our behavior

Physically is a medium size book, with less than 100 pages. The letter size is good enough for easy reading. That is to say, the book has good quality.

The book tells a short tale. Although is a short story, you can find a deep description of "men" perception about changes. I would recommend you to read it slowly in order to avoid missing parts or messages that you can find on it.

The story is an analogy between the knights and the modern men. In fact, I think it could cause different feelings for men and for women. I am not sure but I think that the book will be more interesting for those who have difficult in changing than those who are willing to change. But for sure both will enjoy it.

This book is for everybody. I recommend it specially for those who find it so hard to admit their own responsibility or try to avoid circumstances where will need to accept mistakes . You will find that it was too hard for the knight to change his habits as well as it could be difficult for modern men to changes his attitude.

Since the knight tale could be also a metaphor for actual men, keep your mind open if you wish to read it. You could be reading my comments with a critic attitude to find mistakes on my "rusty" writing (and I would appreciate them since I am trying to improve my writing), or under a shining armor.

Harold Lamb (1892-1962), who wrote biographies and screenplays as well as historical fiction, is best remembered for his tales of Cossacks and Crusaders. Howard Andrew Jones is the managing editor of Black Gate magazine and the editor in chief of the online journal Sword and Sorcery. Barrie Tait Collins, a cousin of Harold Lamb, has worked as an editor, writer, and, since 1975, a journalist for various Connecticut newspapers.

Vivid, Readable, and Accurate

The British cherish their popular historians. We in the United States forget them. And of all our forgotten popular historians from the early to mid-twentieth century, Harold Lamb may well be the best of the bunch. He was immensely successful and popular as both a fiction and non fiction writer. Lamb was absolutely prolific with major screenplays to his credit, magazine articles in the best journals running into the hundreds along with thirty to forty odd books. To find this title in Amazon run a search in books for "Harold Lamb - Constantinople," and you will find all the available used offerings. Ultimately, however, the question is how does this book stand up to critical scrutiny as accurate, informative history? And the short answer is far better than G. P. Baker's biography of Justinian, and I rated that at four stars. By all means, if Justinian the Great is of interest to you, you will enjoy this book and probably learn a great deal.

As with all of his histories, Lamb's grasp of his subject verges on the encyclopedic. This man had the money and time to research his projects. It is obvious that the author spent substantial time in the near east and at Ravenna and Venice researching this book. This rewards the reader with vivid descriptions and insights into both Byzantine art and architecture. All aspects of Justinian's career are well covered. The important interactions of the principal players are presented with a marvelous wealth of detail and insightful analysis. Justinian and Theodora, Narses, Belisarius, John of Cappadocia, Peter the Patrician and the rest of the cast of characters integral to the Age of Justinian are all fully developed. The major issues of the era are at least handled competently or better. The overwhelming importance of religion in all aspects of sixth century Byzantine existence is amply demonstrated. Authors such as Glanville Downey may show more depth and deeper analytical powers in regard to these matters, but Lamb provides a fascinating read that is factually almost spot on.

An interesting first chapter indicates both the strengths and weaknesses of this book. It represents a prelude to the material to be covered in the bulk of the text. It is loaded with conclusory assumptions about the fall of the western Roman empire. It is also replete with translated quotes of contemporary sources and loads of factual material to support these suppositions. Also, expect some invented conversations, this is popular history after all. There may be one or two anachronistic references I can identify. Expect as well a vivid narrative history that conforms to known historical facts 99% of the time along with ample illumination of the larger issues. A summation of Lamb's thoughts on Justinian and his era is supplied in an afterword, and most interestingly a final section on "the illusion of history" closes the book. In this short closing chapter, many of the classical interpretations of the Age of Justinian are glossed. And, I find that I am far closer to agreeing with Lamb's assessment of Justinian the Great than I am with Gibbon, Toynbee, Bury, Voltaire or the other scholars cited. This book is highly recommended both as a fun and informative read and an enlightening encounter with an almost forgotten author.

Handbook worth having

If you are at the beginning of your change management career then this is a fantastic handbook. Even experienced change managers will find some pearls of wisdom. Worth having on your book shelf if change management is the profession you play in.

A de-Nazified meteorite

The canonical version of “The Shooting Star” is my favorite Tintin adventure. The slapstick humor and the, shall we say, Haddockisms are kept down to a minimum. The actual plot takes centre stage, as Tintin and his friends embark on a scientific expedition to the Arctic Sea in order to claim a huge meteorite containing a mysterious metal. The story contains a few science fiction elements, and lampoons both distracted scientists and doomsday prophets (in the Swedish version, the prophet Philippulus is actually called Pythagoras). Naturally, a greedy banker from “Sao Rico”, a certain Mr Bohlwinkel, also wants to lay his hands on the valuable piece of space debris, and does everything in his power to sabotage the legitimate expedition. Parallels to Jules Verne's “The Golden Meteor” have been duly noted.

Unfortunately, “The Shooting Star” is seriously marred by the fact that the original version was published in Nazi-occupied Belgium and contained anti-Semitic propaganda. The greedy banker was named Blumenstein in the original, and his expedition sailed from the United States, a nation the Nazis claimed was controlled by Jews. It also contained other examples of anti-Semitism. Tintin's creator Hergé cleaned up the story after World War II, but that simply made matters worse, since he came across as an opportunist (which he, of course, was).

The de-Nazification of “The Shooting Star” also created a number of anomalies. I always wondered why most characters from the purported Latin American nation of “Sao Rico” look White and have English names. That's because they *were* North Americans in the original version. Bohlwinkel (ex-Blumenstein) still looks pretty “Jewish”, however, and even spouts a red star-like emblem on his tuxedo! Meanwhile, defenders of Hergé has claimed that the original story contains secret anti-Nazi codes, such as the menacing spider being called “fasciata” (compare “fascism”), or the crazy prophet's name Phillipulus (compare Phillip Petáin). I'm not sure if I buy this, and I wonder whether anyone ever noticed at the time?

It's a shame that such a good story has such a colorful background (and, occasionally, foreground), but at least the fate of “The Shooting Star” shows that the Allies won the shooting war…
