Saigon, November, 1978. Under the cover of darkness a desperate family leaves home and friends, hoping to escape the harsh regime of Communist Vietnam. Their goal is to reunite with the four oldest children sent ahead to the United States, but first they must evade ruthless communist patrols. Eleven-year-old Nam Moi is confused, afraid and now homeless. Her future seems bleak and devoid of hope. The risks are great, but it was not the first time her family had taken risks. Long ago, her Ung ancestors had migrated from China to northern Vietnam. When the country was partitioned in 1954, they moved again to South Vietnam. Nam Moi, or “little girl from the South”, was born in Saigon during the Vietnam War. Her family survived the fighting, but living under Communist rule was very hard. After years of planning and debating, Nam Moi’s father made the bold decision to escape, in hope of finding a better life for his children somewhere else. Nam Moi had been taught that sometimes gambles must be taken for a better life. But would this huge gamble bring freedom or cost them all their lives? Nam Moi: A Young Girl’s Story of Her Family’s Escape from Vietnam is a true story of triumph over repression, danger and hardship. Escaping from Vietnam meant traveling on a rusty cargo ship in the South China Sea for months, barely hanging onto life. Nam Moi’s father paid precious gold for the chance to escape the country, but the price the family paid to survive was much higher than gold. They had to start their lives all over again.

A Privilege to Read

Nam Moi resurrects Charlene Ung’s happiest and most tragic memories of growing up Hakka and adapting to many lands. Vividly and honestly, she describes a life rich in strong family values and bonds that have helped the Ungs survive their flight from Communism in Vietnam. Those same familial ties along with such admirable qualities as thrift, optimism, industry, resilience, and respect for others permeate both her childhood anecdotes, her struggles immigrating to the United States, and her successful endeavors in building a new life here. Overall, I definitely enjoy reading about her maturation from an innocent, rambunctious child to an industrious adult who can adapt to modern, progressive attitudes yet remain true to her Hakka roots.

As one Hakka woman’s story of family and self-discovery, Nam Moi must have been an emotionally difficult story to tell for all parties involved. Though I can never imagine what hardships Charlene has overcome, I am thankful for the privilege of reading her story. No matter what backgrounds we come from, we should never forget our predecessors because their trials make us who we are today. In this respect, Charlene Ung’s Nam Moi is an important tale of legacy and is more than worth a read.

Nam Moi is truly an amazing book with each of its chapter

Nam Moi is truly an amazing book with each of its chapter, highly collective, recommended to read. The author showed us how a vietnamese tight-knit family, closely bonding to help each other live through those dark days when the freedom was forcibly and abruptly ended in South Vietnam, April 1975 by the invading North communist Vietnamese.
Many lives have been perished afterward at so-called "China Sea" during the mass exodus that is now slowly forgotten. This book has resurrected those days of sufferings, injustices, dangers, full of uncertainties... created by an oppressive totalitarian regime that a typical vietnamese family lived and successfully pulled through with their resilience and determination in searching for freedom.

This book is a very inspirational and heart deep book. It truly touched my heart to hear the obstacles and trouble Nam Moi and her family went across to get to America. Since I am also from the Hakka roots, this story helped me learn about my ancestry and the Hakka culture. This story gave me a clear visual of one’s daily life in Vietnam and the struggles and hardships to find freedom. Nam Moi’s story is very inspirational to all who reads it because it demonstrates the courage and perseverance her family struggled to flee Vietnam and come to America to seek for a better life. After reading this story, it has gotten me to be more interested to write a novel of my own.

About the Author
Dr. Federico Alberto Pozzi received the Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Milano - Bicocca (Italy). His Ph.D. thesis is focused on Probabilistic Relational Models for Sentiment Analysis in Social Networks. His research interests primarily focus on Data Mining, Text Mining, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing and Social Network Analysis, in particular applied to Sentiment Analysis and Community Discovery in Social Networks. He currently works at SAS Institute (Italy) as Senior Solutions Specialist - Integrated Marketing Management & Analytics.

Dr. Elisabetta Fersini is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Milano - Bicocca (Italy). Her research activity is mainly focused on statistical relational learning with particular interests in supervised and unsupervised classification. The research activity finds application to Web/Text mining, Sentiment Analysis, Social Network Analysis, e-Justice and Bioinformatics. She actively participated to several national and international research projects. She has been an evaluator for international research projects and member of different scientific committees. She co-founded an academic spin-off specialized in sentiment analysis and community discovery in social networks.

Prof. Enza Messina is a Professor in Operations Research at the Department of Informatics Systems and Communications, University of Milano-Bicocca, where she leads the research Laboratory MIND (Models in decision making and data analysis). She holds a Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics and Operations Research from the University of Milano. Her research activity is mainly focused on decision models under uncertainty and more recently on statistical relational models for data analysis and knowledge extraction. In particular, she developed relational classi cation and clustering models that finds applications in different domains such as systems biology, e-justice, text mining and social network analysis.

Prof. Bing Liu is a professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He received his PhD in Arti cial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. His current research interests include sentiment analysis and opinion mining, data mining, machine learning, and natural language processing. He has published extensively in top conferences and journals, and is the author of three books: Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining (2012), Web Data Mining: Exploring Hyperlinks, Contents, and Usage Data (first edition, 2007; second edition, 2011), and Sentiment Analysis: Mining Opinions, Sentiments and Emotions (2015). Two of his papers received 10-year test-of-time awards from KDD, the premier conference of data mining and big data. His research has also been cited on the front page of the New York Times. He currently serves as the Chair of ACM SIGKDD, and is an Fellow of ACM, AAAI, and IEEE.

And, don't eat the fish....

Ever since Jeffrey Sachs hit me between the eyes with a two-by-four with The Price of Civilization I have been devouring every book I can find on the subject of the American voter who seems to be voting the country into destruction by ignoring what is happening all around us. The spotlight seems to have settled on the segment of society described in White Trash, Hillbilly Elegy, Thomas Frank's book about Kansas and a number of others, all attempting to understand what we now see as a Trump supporter. Strangers in Their Own land, in my opinion, is one of the best of these books I have read. The author is different in that she has much more compassion for her subjects and does not sink to ridicule out of exasperation...a common reflex when people seem to be acting against all reason and prudence...but she makes a real effort to understand them and the source of this perplexing behavior. I have learned that there is no arguing with their point of view, but for those of us trying to make sure that we ourselves are not losing our minds, the statistical information in this book is clear and relevant and to me, worth the price of the book.

A fairly objective look at the inner workings of Louisiana's political and industrial culture

I took a particular interest in this book because I am actually from Lake Charles and grew up there, until leaving at 17 to join the Navy. I felt the author did a fair job in setting the scene. At first she made it sound like a primitive back-woods kind of place, but eased into a more flattering depiction once she was talking to some of the local people. That's what makes South La great anyway, the people. The book offers several interesting paradoxes: the main paradox of why people are so right-leaning, big government hating in a state that relies so heavily on federal subsidies, and also the juxtaposition of people needing big industry for their livelihoods, but also hating that they have to live with its pollution and corruption within the state government. She uses a lot of statistics and facts to make her points, and for the most part, I found it's an objective analysis of the state and explaining it's political leaning.

The Great Paradox Personified

I have been fortunate to become familiar with the places and people of Louisiana described in this book and I can't begin to express how grateful I am to the author for delving into explaining "the great paradox". I am Californian born and raised and originally traveled to southwest Louisiana to pick up an accordion made by Mark Savoy in Eunice LA. I keep returning because the people I met, and friends I made, are as kind, gentle, open and intelligent as the folks described here. But, try as I might to reconcile the differences in our social/political views I failed....until I read this book! Thank-you Arlie Russell Hochschild for offering this bridge between the right and the left. Fellow MSNBC watchers, after reading this book I urge you to visit southwest Louisiana yourself - you will never view "the South" or Southerners, the same.

About the Author
Tom Garrison (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is emeritus professor of Marine Science at Orange Coast College (OCC) in Costa Mesa, California, one of the largest undergraduate marine science departments in the United States. Dr. Garrison also holds an adjunct professorship at the University of Southern California. He has been named the country's Outstanding Marine Educator by the National Marine Technology Society, is a founding member of COSEE, writes a regular column for the journal Oceanography, and has written for National Geographic magazine. He was a winner of the prestigious Salgo-Noren Foundation Award for Excellence in College Teaching. Dr. Garrison was an Emmy Award team participant as writer and science advisor for the PBS syndicated Oceanus television series, and writer and science advisor for The Endless Voyage, a set of television programs in oceanography completed in 2003. His widely used textbooks in oceanography and marine science are the college market's best sellers. In 2009, the faculty of OCC selected Dr. Garrison as the institution's first Distinguished Professor, and in 2010, he was honored by the Association of Community College Trustees as the outstanding community college professor in western North America. His interest in the ocean dates from his earliest memories. As he grew up with a U.S. Navy admiral as a dad, the subject was hard to avoid! He had the good fortune to meet great teachers who supported and encouraged this interest. Years as a midshipman and commissioned naval officer continued the marine emphasis; graduate school and 421 years of teaching has allowed him to pass his oceanic enthusiasm to more than 65,000 students. Although he retired from full-time professoring in 2011, he continues to bother OCC staff and students on a regular basis.

Incredible depth, a true treasure for economic students

Seriously this is one of the best books I've read in years. A great historical account of the field of economics. After finishing this book, I have a much better appreciation for economic history and it's main intellectual contributors. The suggestions for further reading after each chapter is complete gold and I plan on tackling many of those books. As I reading through the book, I become simply amazed at the depth of the writer's knowledge. In summary, if you are hard core fan of economics I believe you will simply love and cherish this book.

Good synopsis but poor analysis

I have always felt uneasy with this book since I was an under graduated student, 30 years ago. This is undoubtedly a quiet useful book for anyone who needs a bird's-eye view of the classics in economics. If you don't have time to read Smith's Wealth of Nations or Marshall's Principles, here you have the book you need. However, it is not here that you can look for a good analysis of the meaning and implications of the main schools of economic thought, as well as the relevance of the work of its most distinguished authors and their social and intellectual environment. That is reason why I always preferred Schumpeter's History of Economic Analysis. Today, that I am lecturing this course my dissatisfaction has increased, among other reasons because you have more and better textbooks, such as Lionel Robbins' History of Economic Thought, Mark Skoussen's Making of Modern Economics, or Jürg Niehams' History of Economic Theory, which I really enjoyed reading because they try to make a portrayal of the intellectual and human stature of the most important economists of all times and their background.

Never mind that she graduated from Dartmouth, is a proud and loving mother to her three kids, AND owns Thursday night TV, Rhimes was a mess until her sister made a chance remark at Thanksgiving – “You never say Yes to anything.” That’s when Rhimes decided not only to face her fears but to hug the life out of them. (OK, so some of her fears involve wearing a Carolina Herrera dress, gorgeous shoes and showing up at a star-studded benefit… but hey, fears is fears.) Rhimes found that saying Yes sometimes, paradoxically, also meant saying no, too – as in, and this is my version, Yes, I want to be a thin person. About the Author
Shonda Rhimes is the critically acclaimed and award-winning creator and executive producer of the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal and the executive producer of How to Get Away With Murder. Her writing credits also include Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement, Crossroads, and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. Rhimes holds a BA from Dartmouth College in English Literature with Creative Writing and received her MFA from the USC School of Cinema-Television, where she was awarded the prestigious Gary Rosenberg Writing Fellowship. Rhimes was born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois, and now runs her production company, Shondaland, from Los Angeles, where she lives with her three daughters. She is the author of Year of Yes and The Year of Yes Journal.

Why Shonda Rhimes is the Queen of all she surveys...

I don't really stalk Shonda Rhimes (although I will break traffic laws to get home in time to live tweet Scandal every Thursday night), but when Shonda speaks I do tend to listen. so I was hot on Amazon downloading this book the day it was released. And this is a praiseworthy, life affirming, sister-centric, love filled, thank you Jesus!, Where-has-this-book been-all-of-my-life kind of read. So why is Shonda the unstoppable, irrepressible Queen of all she surveys? Let me count the ways:

1) First off, unlike a lot of authors, she did not pre-seed Amazon with preselected reviewers hitting up all 5 stars and offering formulaic praise. When I signed on this morning there were 3 reviews versus the 20-30 replicant reviews you often see when a new book is released. Why? Because she doesn't need forced praise. The book is good. Very good. And like Shonda herself, it doesn't need fabricated self promotion but can stand on it's own merits.

2) She's funny. Like laughing out loud in public funny. Like people changing seats on the bus because you're smiling and snickering to yourself funny. Like spitting up coffee and pastry on the Kindle screen funny. You get the point.

3) In addition to being funny, she's pitch perfect in her capacity to convey authenticity, vulnerability, and confidence all within the same paragraph.

4) She's also wicked smart and genuinely compassionate. Sadly those two traits sometimes don't travel in pairs.

5) Her year of living fearlessly by fully stepping into her life and saying YES inspires because it shows that even a Shonda Rhimes can suffer from the "Who Me?" disease that afflicts so many women. Granted, Shonda needed to say yes to things like hanging out with the Obama's or being honored as a Human Rights Boss, but she brilliantly shows that despite the loftiness of her life, like many of us she too struggled with stepping into her well earned right to "stand in the sun" without fear or apology.

6) And like a good and righteous Queen, she shares the glow. She has done more than any other TV writer in history to celebrate, and as she says normalize, ALL human experiences by merely allowing people of all orientations, races, and ethnicities to BE and To do and say human things on television. Radical inclusiveness...what a concept.

I could go on, but really just read the book. Worth every ducket.

A smart, touching, funny must-read

Year of Yes, is a must read for so many reasons. Shonda shares her journey with such humor, vulnerability and authenticity that you feel like you were with her for this incredible ride she took as she challenged herself to be more, do more, and live a full life. For anyone who's given in to fear, or gotten a little too comfortable (aka all of us), read this.

Loved the book!

As a never married mother of two young ladies who loves red wine, is very shy and introverted but yet is a successful business woman I highly recommend this book.
I could appreciate her stories especially since I have had many of the same exact thoughts and feelings with regard to speaking in public and venturing out of my comfort zone. I was so nervous about giving a speech in New York that I didn't realize until the plane landed that I wore two different shoes. Although my struggle with shyness continues I am inspired by her ability to work through her issues.
I especially loved her comments about being a mother and not getting married. I plan to use her words "my happy ending is not the same as your happy ending" when people ask me why I am not married.
I have read other reviews about the writing style and language in the book but I thought it helped to connect the readers to her and her story.

Attractive and useful

This is a really good book for a beginning gardener with limited space. I especially like that it shows many attractive container gardens as well as traditional in-the-ground and raised beds. One small quibble...I think they mean "3 feet squared" not "3 square feet" (which in the U.S. means 1'x3') since the illustrations always show 3'x3' arrangements (or "9 square feet'). Either way, they have practical plans for producing useable food in a very small space.

Wonderful gardening book for Beginners and Not So Beginners!

I bought this book after reviewing it several times at a book sale at my work. It is filled with information for beginners and somewhat experienced alike. It introduces you to square foot gardening as well giving you very clear pictures on insects you will find in your garden. I think you will enjoy it and find it educational as well as inspirational.I have been gardening for 2 decades and I still found some inspiration as well as some information I needed.

Grade 1-5?Yep presents a polished, touching retelling of a story he calls "a Southern Chinese version of a traditional Chinese tale." When a poor farmer falls into the clutches of a dragon, he begs each of his seven daughters to save him from death by marrying the horrifying creature. At last, the youngest consents. The dragon carries Seven (the daughters are named in birth order, following Chinese tradition) to his home under the sea. Far from being frightened, Seven is full of wonder. When she tells the dragon, "The eye sees what it will, but the heart sees what it should," the monster turns into a handsome prince. They live happily until Seven longs to return home. There, her jealous third sister tries to drown her and takes her place as mistress of the dragon's palace. Then the Prince must go searching for his lost bride. Lavish, hyperrealistic paintings appear opposite each page of text, with two wordless double-page spreads interspersed. However, few of the paintings begin to capture the shivery wonder of the narrative. Most are too literal to illuminate the mood of the story, and leave little scope for the imagination. In the version included in Betsy Hearne's Beauties and Beasts (Oryx, 1993), the monster bridegroom is a snake. Here, the snake transforms itself into a dragon, increasing the excitement and danger. Gr. 4^-6, younger for reading aloud. A small, harmless water serpent that is saved from death by a young teen changes into an immense dragon and threatens a poor farmer's life. The farmer's only chance lies in convincing one of his seven daughters to marry the dragon. Readers familiar with fairy tales may guess that the youngest and prettiest daughter, who was the serpent's savior, will agree to the marriage to save her father. In this Chinese variant of "Beauty and the Beast," dragon and girl soar into the night sky and then plunge into a deep sea, where the girl's courage and character are tested again before she discovers that her future husband is a handsome human and ruler of the sea kingdom. After spending some time in her husband's kingdom, she visits her family's home, where both her inner and her outward strength are further tested. Mak's illustrations dramatically combine realism and fantasy. The suspense of the story and the charm of its language should appeal to readers of different ages. A good choice for reading aloud. A Chinese fairy tale story.

An excellent book on Chinese fairy tales about a Prince/Dragon and a poor, but skilled and beautiful peasant girl. It contains exquisite illustrations that captured my preschool and grade school daughters attention. I highly recommend this fantasy book for preschoolers, through grades three. The reading level and some content (reasoning) for older grades. Recommended for students, teachers, and parents.

I read this ONCE when I was a little girl and never forgot it. So I was thrilled when I saw it on Amazon. The book got to me in good shape and right away. The illustrations are truly beautiful, some breathtaking and the story is a lovely example of Chinese folklore as retold by Lawrence Yep. My childhood recollections were not let down. Five stars!
