"Intricate and extraordinary." - New York Times on The Fifth Season (A New York Times Notable Book of 2015)

The start of a new fantasy trilogy by Hugo, Nebula & World Fantasy Award nominated author N.K. Jemisin.

THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME.

A season of endings has begun.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun.

It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter.

It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Review
"Intricate and extraordinary."―The New York Times

"[The Fifth Season is] an ambitious book, with a shifting point of view, and a protagonist whose full complexity doesn't become apparent till toward the end of the novel. ... Jemisin's work itself is part of a slow but definite change in sci-fi and fantasy."―Guardian

"Astounding... Jemisin maintains a gripping voice and an emotional core that not only carries the story through its complicated setting, but sets things up for even more staggering revelations to come."―NPR Books

"Jemisin's graceful prose and gritty setting provide the perfect backdrop for this fascinating tale of determined characters fighting to save a doomed world."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"A must-buy...breaks uncharted ground."―Library Journal (starred review)

"Jemisin might just be the best world builder out there right now.... [She] is a master at what she does."―RT Book Reviews (Top Pick!)

"The Fifth Season is a powerful, epic novel of discovery, pain, and heartbreak.... It is a novel that demands much of its readers; it rewards them aplenty and is one of those novels that becomes more powerful after deep consideration and subsequent readings."―SFF World

"This is an intense, exciting novel, where survival is always on the line, set in a fascinating, original and dangerous world with an intriguing mystery at the heart of it. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!"―Martha Wells

"Brilliant...gorgeous writing and unexpected plot twists."―Washington Post

"[A]ngrily, beautifully apocalyptic."―B&N.com

"Heartbreaking, wholly unexpected, and technically virtuosic, The Fifth Season is a tour-de-force. I felt every shock--and the book is packed with them--in my marrow. It's no exaggeration to say that Jemisin expands the range of what great fantasy can be."―Brian Staveley, author of The Emperor's Blades

"With every new work, Jemisin's ability to build worlds and break hearts only grows."―Kirkus (starred review)

A new high point for Jemisin's already-impressive career.
By S. Addison
I've enjoyed all of Jemisin's books thus far, but I often avoid starting series books until the whole series is complete because I hate being left hanging, waiting for the next installment. But "The Fifth Season" was totally worth the suspense. The world of The Stillness - an ironically-named super-continent that suffers frequent, massive environmental catastrophes thanks to its unstable geology - is a captivating setting for the story's three narrators, each of whom is forced to journey across the dangerous, shifting land. In conceiving a society able to do what it takes to survive across multiple devastating periods of disaster and climate change, Jemisin creates a world order that each of her main characters sees through different eyes: one hoping it will offer her refuge, one furious about its demands on her, and one hoping to just avoid its gaze altogether.

Even though I enjoy a good Tolkein-esque fantasy, it's so refreshing to read Jemisin's writing, which always takes a fresh departure from the pseudo-medevial-Europe settings so common in the genre. Rather than elves and orcs and plundering armies, Jemisin gives us orogenes (those gifted with the ability to control geological forces), stone-eaters (non-humans who can move through solid rock with their own, mysterious agenda), and a continent that is a greater threat to its people than any army. Whether the strict, caste-driven, xenophobic society that has evolved in response to the environment is a necessary evil or a regime to be overthrown is an argument that will likely span the entire trilogy.

"The Fifth Season" could be considered part of the vein of SF/F that addresses environmental and climate change issues (e.g. Nicola Griffith's "Slow River," Paolo Bacigalupe's "The Windup Girl") but in this trilogy, change is inevitable and largely beyond human control. The book builds toward several narrative twists slowly revealed in its final third; I had picked up on enough very subtle hints to suspect some of them, but they still came into focus with a satisfying emotional "click" that made me glad I waited and didn't stumble across any spoilers. I was so captivated by the narrative that I literally woke up in the night wanting to read more (thanks, insomnia! thanks, book light!). Waiting for the next two chapters leaves me feeling as unsettled as the world of The Stillness itself.

Masterful Writer but Very Dark Story
By Das Englisch von Königin
N.K. Jemisin is a fantastic writer. This is a very original story which is cleverly told and full of surprises. I like how there are three different stories being told, but she ties them all together very well in the end and in an unexpected and surprising way. She handles points of view masterfully, moving from one to another without jarring the reader. Not many authors can do that, nor can they write in the 2nd person, let alone do it well. Ms. Jemisin does all that and more, moving back and forth in time seamlessly without losing the reader. It's a very original novel, unlike anything in fantasy I've ever read before. My only quibble with the book is that it is so dark and depressing and it never seems to let up. The loss of loved ones by the characters, the constant feeling of coming doom, the constant geophysical destabilization of the world they live in makes everything so dark. It's definitely not a happy book by any means. Would I read more books by this author? Most definitely. Would I read more in this series? Probably not if it continues to be so dark.

Jemisin at her finest!
By Bibliotropic .net
Since reading the Inheritance trilogy, I’ve been a fan of Jemisin’s writing, and I lusted after this book for well over a year. So when it finally made its way into my hands, I had extremely high hopes for it. I spent that time happily sheltered from any spoiler more detailed than the release date, so I went into it blind, knowing only that it was written by an author whose work I love.

I can’t even begin to say how even my legendary expectations were blown out of the water.

The story starts with Essun, a woman whose husband has murdered their young son and kidnapped their daughter, because he found out that Essun and her children were orogenes, those hated and dangerous manipulators of the earth. Essun sets out on a quest to kill her husband and recover her daughter, but a powerful seismic event has just happened, starting an unprecedented Season and changing the fate of humanity. Told alongside Essun’s story are the stories of Syenite, a young orogene on a mission with the most powerful orogene alive, and Damaya, an orogene just starting her training at the Fulcrum. Over time we see how these stories converge, but it’s not in the way many readers might first expect.

What to say about the world of The Fifth Season? The planet, or at least the known inhabited land, is one large continent called the Stillness. Nobody has much inclination to seek potential land elsewhere, because seismic activity is common and devastating, and tsunamis are a very real and not uncommon danger for people living in coastal communities, let alone those at sea. Humanity has survived disaster after disaster, civilizations crumbling and new ones arising, and the Sanze empire has been in power for most of recorded history. It is, on its surface, a fascinating and unique fantasy world.

But scratch below the surface and you see that it’s more complicated than that. It isn’t said outright, but there are strong hints dropped that it’s not a secondary world so much as this world, and that the whole story is post-apocalyptic fantasy. Which is uncommon, and often extremely interesting when done right.

And Jemisin does it right!

There are so many wonderful and subtle things I loved about this book. It’s worth pointing out that treatment of gender and sexuality were two of the things that resonated strongly with me. Transgender people are encountered, and nobody makes a big deal of it. Someone presents as a woman, you treat them like a woman. End of story. Alabaster prefers to sleep with men, Innon is happy to sleep with men or women. Things that this society still treats as odd and worthy of stares are treated as just part of people, no more odd than being cisgender or heterosexual. You can almost here the, “Yeah, what of it?” being asked every time it crops up in text, because the subtlety is so blatant that it’s practically challenging the reader to make a big deal of something that shouldn’t be, if they dare.

Of all three stories being told, I think I found Syenite’s and Damaya’s sections the most interesting. It wasn’t that Essun’s chapters were boring or poorly written, but from the perspective of personal taste, I found them less appealing than the others. Syenite’s chapters had quite a bit of action to them, which helped, and I’ve always had a draw to stories of kids encountering unique school-like settings like Damaya did. Essun’s story of vengeance in a world being slowly destroyed was compelling, and it being told in from the second-person viewpoint made many of the emotional scenes hit powerfully hard, and maybe that was part of why I liked the other sections more, too. Some things aren’t exactly enjoyable to read, given their subject matter, even when the skill that crafted the scene is first-rate and deserves to be read and appreciated.

The Fifth Season is Jemisin at her finest, and is a stellar novel not to be missed by fantasy fans. It hits hard, an earthquake to the soul; it wrings you out and puts you back together again. Powerful prose, amazing world- and culture-building, high emotional investment, all put together by a master of the writer’s art. This is a legend in the making!

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4–The people of Maldinga take their unpleasant secrets to Kalli, the secret-keeper. A baker tells her that he sells bread that weighs less than full measure, a matchmaker reveals that she lied about a groom's merits, and a rich man discloses that he refused to help a beggar that came to his home. Only Taln, a potter, does not bring secrets. Instead, Kalli visits his shop and they enjoy friendly conversations. One winter, she becomes ill, and it is only when the villagers share some happy confidences with her (My mama and I dance in the meadow) that she regains her health. Then Taln arrives to reveal his own hidden thoughts–I love the secret-keeper. The illustrations are an intriguing blend of paint and collage that exude texture and depth. Illuminating oil colors contrast with the softer and more muted watercolors. Expressive faces and postures individualize the characters, and a lovely spread shows the villagers celebrating Kalli's recovery. An uplifting modern fairy tale.–Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma Library, CA

From Booklist
K-Gr. 3. Set in an enchanting village, this story about the burden of secrets is buoyed by Solomon's gorgeous illustrations and the often-lovely language used by first-time author Coombs. Tall and mysterious, raven-haired Kalli is Maldinga's secret keeper. Villagers come to her forest home to tell her their shameful secrets, which are transformed into objects that Kalli stores in the drawers that line her cottage. The villagers go away "a little lighter of heart," but Kalli is so weighed down by their revelations that she eventually takes to her bed. It's the blacksmith who comes up with the fine idea of sharing good secrets, which include a whispered declaration from the potter's handsome son: "I love the secret-keeper." All is repaired a little too quickly, but children won't mind too much; they'll likely be captivated by the warm tones of Solomon's paintings, framed in round or rectangular borders, and by Kalli and her fellow Maldingans, their eyes shining with alertness and intelligence as they live harmoniously with nature. Review
Daily the people of the village come through the woods to Kalli's house to tell their guilty secrets, which she hides away in the hundreds of wooden drawers that line the walls of her cottage, like apothecary cases or library catalog cabinets. Only one person, Taln, the potter, does not come to visit. As fall turns to winter, the secrets begin to weigh heavily on Kalli, and she becomes ill. When a young girl discovers her, the villagers attempt a cure by sharing some happy secrets. After a child tells his secret, a blue butterfly flies from Kalli's hands. As the villagers share good secrets with Kalli and with each other, Kalli recovers and spring returns. Then Taln whispers his secret: "I love the secret-keeper." Solomon's lovely watercolors, framed with jewel-toned borders, varied in size, shape and placement on heavy creamy paper, add fascinating details and emotional depth to this gentle jewel of a tale that will prompt discussion on the sharing of secrets, good and bad. The Power of Happy Secrets
By Lawrence MacKenzie
This is a refreshing tale, perfectly illustrated. My copy of The Secret Keeper has already been loaned and read aloud to intrigued school children. The story produced plenty of curiosity, compassion for Kalli the Secret Keeper, and good discussion.

Kate Coombs has a talent for delightful invention. It's not surprising that a dishonest baker, an irresponsible match maker, or many another burdened villager would feel some relief after Kalli has heard one of their guilty secrets. But readers may be surprised to learn what fittingly symbolic objects the secrets turn into in Kalli's magical hands.

This delightful tale is not just about the burdens of the confidante or counselor; it's about how a community comes to broaden its understanding of secret-sharing. In a crisis, the villagers' decency and love emerge. What about telling their very ill Kalli "bright and fair secrets, like a spring morning"? The secrets told in this part of the story (and the butterflies and other beauteous things they turn into) are wonderfully simple and touching. This is where The Secret Keeper becomes a story of honesty and love, and really gains its gentle power.

The dust jacket says Kate Coombs' first book is for readers "4 to 8", but this is a fine book for older children, too, and parents and other adults--perhaps, especially, those in the helping professions.

I had the honor to read a review copy of The Secret Keeper and it is one of my all-time favorite books. I predict that you will be hearing a lot more about Kate Coombs and her books.

The Secret Keeper reads like a fast-paced traditional folk tale. I loved the wry humor and the subtle lessons.

4 1/2 Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave"
By M. Allen Greenbaum
"The Secret-Keeper" is a sort of child's version of Nathaniel West's masterpiece, "Miss Lonely Hearts," in which a "helper" is similarly overcome by the demands of those needing help. Of course, as a kids' book, the tone is far lighter and the outcome happier, but they share a theme about the burden of receiving confession.

In a beautifully designed and illustrated medieval/hobbit-like setting, long-haired, quiet "Kalli" welcomes men and women of all ages to tell her their secrets. Some secrets seem relatively innocent ("A plain girl loved a handsome boy and dared not tell him"), some, not so (A bribe induces a matchmaker to makes a bad match), but all of them feel heavy to those who hide them. The magical proceedings, the slightly moralistic tone, and the appearance of hero and heroine give this a classic fairy tale aura, and the arched and rectangular framed pictures (done in lush, ornate design with watercolor, oil, and collage) recall the prototypical illustrations of N.C. Wyeth and other early masters. It's truly a gorgeous book.

The plot revolves around Kalli's unselfish generosity, and how it almost overwhelms her. However, the author doesn't clearly establish Kalli's secret-collecting method, causing some initial unnecessary confusion. "Shed," the baker, admits that he cheats when he weighs his customers' bread. In exchange for her confession taking..."He gave Kalli a basket of fresh rolls and a copper coin." When Kalli hears his secret, she "nodded and caught his words in his hand." Now comes the confusing part: "After Shed trudged away with a sigh, Kalli opened her hand again. Shed's secret was a small grey rock, like a stale breadcrumb. Kalli went inside and tucked the secret into one of the tiny drawers that lines the walls of her cottage.

After a few of these exchanges, it's clear that Kalli has the ability to transform the secret into a concrete object, something that can be stored away. However, author Coombs uses a metaphor, "Shed's secret was a small grey rock," something too abstract for concrete-thinking kids. It's also unfortunate that Ms. Coombs compares the rock to a "stale bread crumb" --did Shed cheat by somehow inserting the small rock into his loaves? A simple and clearer presentation might have been something like, "Kalli took his secret and turned it into a small grey rock." All this becomes clearer after a few more examples, but adult readers might want to supplement the text with gestures or some ready explanations if questioned.

Kalli's transformative powers, while itself a metaphor, also drives the plot. As she collects more and more secrets, changing them into small drab objects, she becomes sick. Slowly the villagers realize that they take much more from the secluded woman than any gold piece cold buy. When they discover her sick in bed, they realize that one can also tell Good Secrets, not just bad ones. As they tell her (it's all very rapid, like townspeople in a Jimmy Stewart movie: "...my husband helps folks." "I married my own true love." "I made up a song," "My mama and I dance in the meadow"), Kalli's strength and spirit begins to return. She takes each of these good secrets and changes them into objects--but beautiful, magical objects: A dragonfly, a rainbow, a meadowlark, and more all emanate from Kalli's hand, all revealed in a series of pictures that resemble tapestries. And, speaking of her hand, the quiet potter's son tells the last secret to the now healthy Kalli: "I love the secret keeper." Some toddlers and early elementary schoolers will love this touching, sentimental romance, others may not be ready for it--know your audience. I enjoyed it, and it's followed by a blissful celebration in the meadow, so idyllic and light that you half expect the love to lift the villagers into the air.

The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier's Education, by Craig M. Mullaney

"One of the most thoughtful and honest accounts ever written by a young Army officer confronting all the tests of life." -Bob Woodward

In this surprise bestseller, West Point grad, Rhodes scholar, Airborne Ranger, and U. S. Army Captain Craig Mullaney recounts his unparalleled education and the hard lessons that only war can teach. While stationed in Afghanistan, a deadly firefight with al-Qaeda leads to the loss of one of his soldiers. Years later, after that excruciating experience, he returns to the United States to teach future officers at the Naval Academy. Written with unflinching honesty, this is an unforgettable portrait of a young soldier grappling with the weight of war while coming to terms with what it means to be a man.

From Booklist
Young Captain Mullaney’s admirable, literate autobiography, that of a veteran of combat in Afghanistan, adds much to knowledge of the modern army and makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate over what a “warrior” is these days. Mullaney wryly recounts his years at West Point and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, then writes eloquently of infantry combat and the persistent burden of guilt for not bringing all his men home even as he makes his account a tribute to his fellow warriors. He concludes with sidelights on his teaching post at the U.S. Naval Academy and the moving story of his younger brother’s graduation from West Point and subsequent passage into the ranks of the warriors himself. Almost impossible to put down for anyone interested in the modern U.S. Army or in modern warfare in general. --Roland Green

Review
"[The Unforgiving Minute] is one man's story, warmly and credibly told, and its focus is on the idealism that he brought to military service. In Captain Mullaney's mind there is no contradiction between loyally following orders and intelligently wondering what purpose those orders serve.... The Unforgiving Minute finds both suspense and pathos in the events that took place under its author's command. Its fierce climactic battle is recreated in searing detail. But what gives this memoir its impact isn't the external events that it describes. It's the inner journey of a man who is at first eager to learn as much as he can from service and scholarship. Later on he learns from his mistakes."
-The New York Times

"The Unforgiving Minute is a wonderful, beautifully written story of the education and development of a young soldier-scholar, the coming of age of an infantry officer, and the exercise of a small unit leader's responsibilities in a tough, complex, and frustrating situation in Afghanistan. It captures particularly eloquently and movingly the relationships among those who walk point for our nation as part of that most elite of fraternities, the brotherhood of the close fight."
-General David Petraeus, Commander, U.S. Central Command

"Craig Mullaney's memoir is a thoughtful, introspective work reminiscent of the great British memoirs of World War I. A thousand years from now, historians wanting to know about life in America after 9/11 would do well to look at this book. Equally important, it is an enjoyable and honest book. Read it."
-Thomas E. Ricks, author of New York Times bestseller FIASCO: The American Military Adventure in Iraq and senior military correspondent, The Washington Post

"[Craig Mullaney] ultimately delivers far more than the boy-to-man story that he promised.... In this extraordinary book, Mullaney has taken the trouble to look very closely, and has had the courage to discover the limits to his own understanding. Readers will be fascinated to look over his shoulder."
-Washington Post Book World

"Craig Mullaney has lived every kind of American life-he has been a working- man's son, a prize scholar, a soldier-and what's come out of it is a classic memoir about what it means to be American. By marching so many terrains, he has covered the subjects central to every life: courage, pain, loyalty, honor, friendship, love and the tests any good life faces, year by year, minute by minute. He has also produced a page-turner, a brutally honest account of West Point life, the innocence-abandoned experiences of an American abroad at Oxford, and ultimately an indelible story of life and death on the battlefield. In words his squadmates might recognize, I recommend The Unforgiving Minute without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion."
-David Lipsky, contributing editor to Rolling Stone Magazine and author of the New York Times bestseller Absolutely American

"The Unforgiving Minute is one of the most compelling memoirs yet to emerge from America's 9/11 era. Craig Mullaney has given us an unusually honest, funny, accessible, and vivid account of a soldier's coming of age. This is more than a soldier's story; it is a work of literature."
-Steve Coll, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Ghost Wars and The Bin Ladens

"Former Army Capt. Craig Mullaney admits up front that, emotionally, he takes after his expressive Irish mother, who is "incapable of stemming a tear." Mullaney is less candid and perhaps unaware of his talent for evoking emotion in others..... But The Unforgiving Minute is far from heavy and never maudlin. Mullaney's sense of humor is obvious....It is Mullaney's clear-eyed, warm- hearted candor that elicits empathy.... This self-effacing frankness makes his coming- of- age-in-uniform memoir a charmer.... Stunning [and] pertinent."
-The Army Times "The Unforgiving Minute is the ultimate's soldier's book-universal in its raw emotion and its understanding of the larger issues of life and death. Mullaney, a master storyteller, plunges the depths of self-doubt, endurance, and courage. The result: a riveting, suspenseful human story, beautifully told. This is a book written under fire-a lyrical, spellbinding tale of war, love, and courage. The Unforgiving Minute is the Three Cups of Tea of soldiering."
-Ahmed Rashid, author of the New York Times bestseller Taliban and Descent into Chaos

"The Unforgiving Minute is a gripping account of a young military officer's quest to prepare for the unknowns of leadership under fire, and his eventual testing in Afghanistan. With unflinching candor, Mullaney depicts his evolution from idealistic teenager to reflective veteran who retains his conviction and patriotism once his innocence is lost. His emotional, often funny memoir takes us to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, through the rigors of Army Ranger school, then on to drunken debates and romance at Oxford, where he had a Rhodes Scholarship.... The book [is] a departure from traditionally dry military memoirs --it reads like a work of literature.... Mullaney's evolution through his intellectual and emotional journey grips on every page; his writing contains a modesty that becomes more endearing as his achievements mount. This is a classic coming-of-age memoir and a valuable insight into post-Sept. 11 conflict."
-Bloomberg.com

"Mullaney writes a great story-a true privilege to read. Entertaining, balanced, and graceful, The Unforgiving Minute is a powerful narrative of purpose, responsibility, courage, and personal growth. Every young man and woman in America should read this book, and aspire to his standard of public service."
-General Wesley Clark, USA (Ret.)

"The Unforgiving Minute is a classic memoir of war and personal development. Craig Mullaney has provided a far greater service to his nation by penning a riveting memoir that should be mandatory reading by every junior officer who dons the military uniform."
-ARMY Magazine

"I recommend The Unforgiving Minute because it is superb and important.... Read the book and you know the caliber of the men and women leading our troops and the troops themselves. More importantly, Craig shows the price of service to country and the cost of sacrifices so few individuals endure in our name."
-The Huffington Post

"Craig Mullaney has written a poignant and evocative book about the great hurdles in coming of age: love, death, belief, and betrayal. Learning from his experience can help us face our own unforgiving minutes. I couldn't stop reading."
-Nathaniel Fick, author of the New York Times bestseller One Bullet Away

"Insightful... This book should be read, certainly, by everyone who has a loved one who is serving in the military, has served or might one day serve. But it also should be required reading for all Americans.... His is a remarkable journey, recounted with unflinching honesty, thoughtful reflection, occasional humor and hard-won wisdom.... An unusual book that combines grittily realistic accounts of war with highly educated reflection and introspection.... If enough people read [The Unforgiving Minute], then perhaps we as a country would not have such a profound lack of understanding of the volunteer troops we send to fight our wars, and of the sacrifices that they and their families make."
-Winston-Salem Journal

"One of the most thoughtful and honest accounts ever written by a young Army officer confronting all the tests of life---education, love, self-knowledge, combat, and the fates of war."
-Bob Woodward

An Instant Classic
By Chris
The Unforgiving Minute is a spectacularly written, extremely accurate depiction of the life of a US Army Officer involved in the Global War on Terror. As a member of the West Point class of 2000, I've shared many experiences with Craig. These include not only our time at West Point, but also time that I spent at the same locations in Afghanistan a year after Craig. His accuracy and presentation are astounding, and the challenges he faces are real.

Beginning with his time as a cadet, Craig takes us through his 4 years at West Point, his time in Ranger school, and his attendance at Oxford as a Rhode's Scholar. He takes us on a journey of developing relationships with his soldiers, and then testing and growing those relationships on the battlefields of Afghanistan. The struggles that he details are something that all Army leaders deal with, but few can put to paper as well as Craig has.

In addition to all that, this book is a love story and a story of family hardships. This book is truly a page turner that I recommend to anyone. "The Unforgiving Minute" is an instant classic that I will read over and over again.

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "DUST ON THE BRIM OF YOUR SERVICE CAP... COULD KILL YOUR PLATOON."
By Rick Shaq Goldstein
This is the life story of West Point graduate... Rhodes Scholar... Afghanistan veteran... Craig Mullaney... who also believe it or not... wound up teaching at the Naval Academy. The author takes you from his childhood which included great admiration for his hard working Father, to an in depth look at life for a plebe at the hallowed grounds of West Point. It's invigorating for the reader as Craig describes the demanding goals that are set so high for our future leaders... both physically... and academically. The smallest detail is never small enough to be overlooked. A tiny... seemingly insignificant detail now... can save a life on the battlefield. One of the most enjoyable parts of this literary journey are the quotations that are peppered throughout the story. They range from Plato: "ONLY THE DEAD HAD SEEN THE END OF WAR." to "WHO SEEKS PEACE MUST PREPARE FOR WAR."

After West Point Craig wins a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and in my opinion this is the one part of the book that loses a little traction. After completing his Oxford education the author enters Ranger School... and during this portion of his training it is literally impossible not to be in absolute awe of these future leaders of America. As an honorably discharged Viet Nam era veteran, I am amazed at the capability to push both the body... and the mind... past any logically accepted limits... and to have the inner strength and fortitude... to push both of them together in harmony. Another laudable character trait constantly displayed by the author throughout this story... is the fact that he... openly shares his fears... doubts... and uncertainties... with the reader. A sterling example of this is when he asks a war veteran: "HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU'LL HANDLE COMBAT?" "YOU WON'T HE RESPONDED. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU'RE THERE." "WHAT YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN IS THAT IT WILL BE CHAOTIC AND LOUD, AND YOU'LL BE READY TO PISS IN YOUR BOOTS. YOU'LL BE MORE SCARED OF LETTING DOWN YOUR MEN THAN ANYTHING THE ENEMY'S GONNA DO TO YOU. AND THEN YOU'LL LEAD FROM INSTINCT AND JUDGMENT. THAT'S THE PRICE OF A SALUTE."

Craig adeptly summarizes his lessons learned from his military and Oxford education when he said: "Where the military academy had taught me how to answer questions, Oxford taught me what to ask." As Craig is deployed to Afghanistan the following words of wisdom echo in his head: "BE POLITE. BE PROFESSIONAL. BE PREPARED TO KILL EVERYONE YOU MEET."

In Afghanistan every bit of Craig's education and training comes in to play as he becomes a leader of men in combat. This tale of a young man with military aspirations takes you full circle from the classroom to specialized training to war and back to the classroom... as an Army man... training young Navy plebes. When the author's younger brother graduates West Point... Craig battles with his inner demons... as to what he should tell him. I say... simply give him this book to read.

Everyone Must Read This. Changed My Mind About the Military
By Q.
I live in Berkeley, CA, and like most of the population here, am as far to the left politically as it is possible to get. I have always had a negative view of the military in general and in particular, of the kind of person who would volunteer for it. It has seemed to me to be the sort of thing men (and to a lesser extent women) do who want to have power over others, and who need to feel superior to others. Needless to say, news from Abu Ghraib did nothing to change my perception of this.

Mullaney's story, however, has changed my mind. His sense of integrity, honor, and humility, along with others he served with, comes across so clearly in his writing, that I have had to re-evaluate my beliefs about military culture. He is the kind of person I would actually trust to carry a gun, and to represent the U.S. in other countries. I can only assume that he would not love the army so much unless it was filled with other people holding values similar to his. He wrote in the Author''s Note that he hoped his book would help America better understand its military. He has done that for me, and I believe many like me will feel the same.

I recommend this book to every American--to those who love the military, and especially to those who think they hate it.

Alice in the Country of Joker is an all-new manga series that reimagines Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland in a sly, sexy shoujo style. This new series is a follow-up to QuinRose's bestselling Alice in the Country of Hearts and Alice in the Country of Clover, but can be read independently.

Alice in the Country of Joker: Circus and Liar's Game continues the adventures of Alice as she goes deeper down the rabbit hole to the country of Joker. Each volume features impressive artwork by Mamenosuke Fujimaru, the same artist for Alice in the Country of Clover, and includes color pinups.

Alice Liddel has now entered a new realm―the country of Joker―where she is reunited with old friends. Yet new challenges abound, as Alice must unravel the mystery of the Circus and the Prison Realm, and deal with the enigmatic Jokers.

A really wonderful book and it came in perfect condition!
By countrygal9009
I really loved this series! I love all of the side stories, as well as the main stories, but I did really like this series a lot. Though the Alice x Blood ship isn't my top favorite, this story really made me realize the potential and the soft side of Blood. I can't wait to read more!
The manga had a great story that delved more into Blood, who he is, his past, and the softness that he hides from others, since he's the mafia boss. I'm trying to write this without giving away spoilers, which is really difficult, so all I can say is the story is amazing and well worth the buy. I personally like owning my books, since I like to re-read them a LOT, especially my favorites, and I already know that I'll be re-reading these a lot. This series also got me really interested in Joker and his story.
The book itself was in perfect condition, there was nothing wrong with the cover or the pages inside. I really love this particular artist (Mamenosuke) and I'm really glad they are the ones who illustrated Blood's story. I really like the other artist(s) as well, but this particular art style is one of my favorites. Sometimes I'll go into book stores and see books that have some dents and dings around the edges of the cover from where other customers haven't handled the books very well, but I didn't have that problem here. The manga was in absolutely perfect condition.
Overall this was a great purchase and I'll definitely be going back to Amazon for future manga purchases!

Do like!

I am rabid about these books. Every time a new one comes out, I have to pounce it! Fair warning though: this volume is a looooooooot of re-cap from Country Of Hearts. It's got some great bits tossed in there (not going to spoil it), but if you're expecting a whole new plotline, you're not really going to find that here. More like, it's setting you up for the plot, if that makes any sense? Still worth having, though. Especially if you're a Jokers fan like me!

Review
"The material is clear and easy to understand. Once teachers reinforce the chapter on 'Your Professional Image and Communicating for Success', students will have more confidence in themselves."

"The chapter on infection control is very effective in rendering the importance of the practice of sanitation in the nail salon. Sanitation is vital in the reducing of the spread of infectious disease. The chapter starts out on a serious note defining state and federal regulation and their governship of the nail industries practice. It gives the student an idea of how important sanitation is to the industry."

"The added information on disinfecting after a pedicure is a big issue and this revision made that clear. This book has exceeded my expectations from previous versions. BRAVO!"

"The chapter on Gels is very informative. Gels are still considered a new service in the industry even though they have been around for years. This is the first time I have seen such a detailed chapter on the subject. I also really like the new design, it is very up to date. It is eye-catching and makes the student notice it. I showed it to other colleagues and they all had the same thoughts on it."

VERY poorly proofread, Milady should be ashamed of their self!!!!!!!
By MissM
To those who merely buy the book just to "learn to do nails" or whatever reason they have for buying it.. sure, its a GREAT book.. cause they don't know any different. For those of us learning from this book in Nail Tech school.. it has MANYYYYY mistakes including the teacher test answer key & state board exam review book!! It does have beautiful updated pics & terminology, but we have to constantly reference the older version to make sure our answers are correct. So why are there 100 proofreaders when clearly they didn't proofread it very well?!!! Shame on Milady!! Sure hope the State Board answers are correct!! :/ Yes, Milady will be fixing all these mistakes when they reprint them (who knows when that will be), but what about our books that are wrong?! Guess we're the guinea pigs.. haha Unfortunately, my instructor might be using the older version for her next class. She is VERY disappointed in this new book!! (FYI) She has 16 yrs experience!! ;) Have a great day!! ;)

Good Book of a Great Man
By N. C. Moore
Briskly paced, exciting read. The scope of Luther's life is staggering. Should he not be considered the most influential figure of the last two millennia? I find it truly fantastic that God used a single man to up-end the religious, economic, social, and even artistic, climates of Europe. What remained untouched?

This is a good read. Though the first Lutheran biography I've read, I'm a little surprised at how highly this work is praised. Many other biographies that I've read are styled and narrated better. Perhaps this is because to understand Luther you must understand the development of Luther's thought worldview before you consider any of his life's consequences. Luther is ever quotable and thankfully Bainton doesn't shy away from a modest number of quotes including excerpts from sermons and Table Talk. The biography is generally balanced considering its only a 400 page book. Luther was a complex man, mostly balanced but not without contradiction. This biography takes on the same sense of proportion. Like most biographers, Bainton seems eager to praise and quick to move past shortcomings.

"Here I Stand" highlights the man's theology and his passion for truth yet Bainton doesn't to show the reader the trailheads of all that the Reformation brought about. At the end of the book the reader is treated to brief sections on Luther's preaching, his hymns, his prayers and his depression.

At times, I found Bainton's writing style a bit bland. Lutheran quotations provided frequent relief. In the hardback Hendrickson edition, more than 50 illustrations are included and serve to compliment rather than distract from the author's ideas.

The Reformation is nothing less than a rediscovery of the Bible and the Gospel. Luther is nothing less than the Father of the Reformation. This is a good book of a great man.

An excellent read
By H.E.
First of all, the seller shipped this book to me quickly. It arrived in excellent shape and except for a little "yellowing" of the edges of the pages, it was in perfect condition for something printed in the early 1950's. I was glad to read this book and I figure to do so once a year or so. You see, I owe Dr. Martin Luther a lot. I grew up in a very strict, Baptist home; keeping the rules was of the highest importance and we did so out of obligation. Later I was a student at Bob Jones University and they taught "keeping the rules", "Doing X-Y- and Z" in order to be right with God, but I began to realize from the study of scripture, exactly as did Martin Luther, that saving faith is a gift from God himself and not an achievement you can gain by carefully observing the rules. Sincerity and extra effort don't endear us to God at all. It takes a little while to un-learn what you've been taught for years, but thank the Lord he stayed with me and I can say now, as did Luther then, that the Christian life is simply a life lived in gratitude for what Christ has done for us - not for what we can do for ourselves. He took the penalty of our sins upon himself on the cross and we are declared "not-guilty" before God. That gift is ours by faith, which is relying on Christ's work - the faith that God gives us. What could be more simple yet so complex because it runs entirely counter to the way our human minds tend to work? Much of the work that Dr. Luther did was to preach, write and teach that we're made God's children - believers - by what Christ has done for us, without any help from us. Thank the Lord for his grace, for the life and testimony of Dr. Luther and for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The Lord's richest blessings to you.

The author is an excellent, eloquent
By despond
I learned much from this book. The author is an excellent, eloquent, and engaging writer. He is very objective and fair, for the most part. I admire Luther even more though i still dislike him for his treatment of the Anabaptists. I wish Luther would have been apolitical and just focused on doing God's work. The author does show that he did not like politics and for the most part, stayed out. But when he did, I believe, he failed.

Aquarian-Age Healing: Bio-Mechanics, by John Hurley, Helen Sanders

Aquarian-Age Healing: Bio-Mechanics was considered revolutionary when it was first published in 1932. After a career as a mechanical engineer, author John Hurley studied chiropractic and researched leading authorities in many fields to devise a new system of healing. Written with coauthor Helen Sanders, the book presented a new way of thinking about human physiology, from the neuromusculoskeletal system down to the cellular level. The book: • emphasizes the importance of environmental influences on the structure and functioning of the human body • recognizes the tremendous influence of gravity and other natural forces on the physical, mental, and emotional health of the individual • introduces gentle technics to rebalance the body around its center of gravity, relieve strain, and promote rest and a return to health and homeostasis. The book also offers a look back at the origins of health care in this country, describing the direction and potential future of health care as it came more and more under the influence of the American Medical Association. This system of healing has stood the test of time, continuing to provide outstanding results in healing where others only promise. It is called Aquarian-Age Healing because the authors believed that in the Aquarian Age greed and violence would cease and people would learn to help each other. As we enter the Aquarian Age, the authors’ vision is entering its time of fruition. The authors proclaim: This is the most important book ever written on the subject of health or the care of the body or the cure of disease. Their claim is seen as perfectly true by the many people who have received amazing benefits from this powerful work.

Provocative and passionate approach to good health
By Janet
In their book, Aquarian age healing, Hurley and Sanders outlined their direct, no nonsense approach to health. Their approach at the time, and even more so in this century, may seem out of the proverbial box to many readers. They took on main stream ideas of health and wellness, head on, with no apologies. It was this tenacity that I found honorable, honest, and endearing.
In the last half of the book Hurley details a technique He named bio-mechanics. Six years ago I had my first bio-mechanics treatment , and it was an epiphany for me. Hurley and Sanders vision was to make it accessible to everyone, a technique where lay people could help each other, bringing balanced health to friends' and families' lives.

Read this book with a detached and open mind, and you may find yourself considering your own health, and how you are the only one who is ultimately responsible for it. John Hurley was a man ahead of his time, but the time is now for all to take charge of their own health and well being.

As a side note, any hardback or paper back needs to appeal to the senses, to make us want to pick it up and begin the reading experience, I really liked the dramatic contrast of the cover colors. The Amazon photo doesn't do justice to the beautiful cobalt blue printed version.

What a diamond of a book!!!
By Stacy Fisher
This is great! I read this book years ago and I have to say that this revised edition is golden for more reasons than one, however the main one is it comes with an INDEX!!! There are so many neat nuggets of information and when I would try to find it again, I would get lost. I am a huge fan of the Index and it's usefulness. Now for the actual meat of the book....
I love the way Hurley writes. I really like how he shares what he really thinks and coming from such an innovative Healer, the depth and insight is mind blowing. I also enjoy what could be described as a prequel to our messed up healthcare system. It's like a trip back in time to see a man passionate about helping people be frustrated with what he saw unfolding.

I took the class from Ken and Shay Ladd years ago to be able to practice Applied Bio-Mechanics and I would definitely recommend taking the class if you want to practice this method of healing yourself as the techniques have developed beyond this writing. But if you are into this work, this is a gem to have on your shelf.
