One review for this volume was complaining about Viz's translation of it. I'm here to address the points he made.

1. Shinigami, which does mean Death God, isn't exactly a good description of what they do. The name they're given in English, Soul Reaper, is a much better name as it fits what they do, which is guide the souls of the dead to the afterlife.

2. There is no language censorship. The Japanese language actually has no swear words, and words also have several meanings. The version he read was an illegally translated copy called a scanlation, in which they translate words very, very literally and out of context. They also have a tendency to translate adjectives as swears because it's easier. The reviewer apparently didn't know that a "company" is subdivision of a military regiment or battalion that constitutes the lowest administrative unit that is usually under the command of a captain and is made up of at least two platoons, which is more correct than squad.

Quincy Archer... hardly appears

After the bleak, rainy misery that suffuses most of the third volume of Tite Kubo's "Bleach," the fourth volume "Quincy Archer Hates You" is a deliberately lighthearted affair -- crazy spiritualists, frog-Hollows, and stuffed-animal drag. But Kubo turns the intensity back on in the last few pages, even as he introduces a mysterious new character.

After Ichigo and Rukia demonstrate their eccentric cleaning methods, Kon decides to go in search of someone who will "cherish" him as he thinks he deserves. He stalks Orihime, tries to charm some of Ichigo's female classmates, and is finally rescued by Yuzu. Turns out being cherished is overrated.

Then the hit ghost-hunting show "Spontaneous Trips" comes to Karakura, much to Ichigo's disgust. But while he and Rukia are watching from the live audience, they witness flamboyant host Don Kanonji turning a basic ghost into a Hollow. Now Ichigo must somehow destroy the Hollow in an abandoned hospital, without endangering the audience -- and while dealing with the kooky Kanonji.

That broadcast causes some problems for Ichigo -- as well as his good grades -- but he's more preoccupied with the false alarms. Every time Rukia gets a Hollow alert, it turns out to be a dud. And unbeknownst to Ichigo, a mysterious bespectacled young man is watching him from a distance...

"Bleach Volume 4: Quincy Archer Hates You" has a somewhat deceptive title -- the character in question doesn't appear until the last chapter, and we don't find out anything about him until the last few pages. Pretty obviously the real info is coming in the chapters to come.

Instead, Kubo provides readers with a calm spot between supernatural storms, and has some fun with lighthearted stories about Kon in frilly dresses and bonnets ("Did he get into some weird scene while he was gone?") and a slightly mad ghost-hunter who drives Ichigo even madder. Our lanky hero's expression of mingled nausea and disgust is hilarious.

That, and we get Keigo causing massive trouble when he learns that Ichigo isn't as dumb as he thought ("While we were out having fun like idiots, you were locked in your room learning! YOU WEIRDO! NERD!"). There are a few serious moments -- such as Don Kanonji realizing where the "mean spirit" came from -- but the overall mood is lighthearted.

And without much of a serious storyline, it's a chance for the characters to lighten up and goof around -- Rukia in particular enjoys the live shoot a little too much, and allows herself to be bribed with rice dumplings. And we find out that not only is Ichigo way smarter than most of the people around him, but he really, really hates "Ghost Hunter"-style shows. Oh, and a few of his pals are suddenly able to hear Hollows -- which is pretty portentous.

"Bleach Volume 4: Quincy Archer Hates You" doesn't have much to do with the Quincy archer, but it's a nice diversion before the next bloody, action-packed adventure.

New to Juicing

I am new to juicing and I just love this book! It has so many yummy recipes and it gives just enough information on the nutritional aspects of the ingredients. My favorite part is the customized recipes for just about any ailment you can think of. It's easy to read and well written. I have never liked greens before and they have many recipes to help mask the taste. There are detailed sections on vitamins and their function. This is an excellent home remedy book for all juicers. It has recipes for weight loss, asthma, detox, bloating, cancer fighting, heartburn, the list goes on. I don't feel the need to buy any other juicing books at this point.

Much more than I expected!

Just got our copy today and I have already made a dent in reading it. I wasn't sure about this whole juicing thing, but really wanted to try it after seeing Fat, Sick and nearly Dead, but he doesn't offer any information about why things are good for you and what each offers. This book goes in depth about the various fruits and veggies, what their flavors are, what goes with what, and which types are best for certain health issues. There are a lot of recipes, most of which look really good! I can't wait to dive into the various recipes!

This is a great book; it tells you all the healing properties of each fruit and vegetable, what they are used for and how to make juice with them. I found it very informative and useful for me as I'm just beginning to venture into the land of juicing. As someone who is not particularly fond of fruits and veggies, this has been a very useful resource.

France's problems explained

France's political class gets the pounding it deserves. The book is academically researched, so there are agreements with other analysts, and disagreements with others. The need for research can make some of the points several times, but overall, the origins of France's problems are clear.

A word about "since 1980". As with any history, it has to stop at a date near the publication date. A 2012 reader can see that many of the problems covered have continued. They show no sign of abating, and the reasons are clear from the book's analysis. Recently there have been new events in France and Europe which are important to a 2012 reader, but necessarily absent from the research. Even so, the book's analysis of the political class "since 1980" lets a reader project some effects into the present. Eventually, historians will be able to analyze what France and Europe are like today. Hopefully, they won't ignore the early political class origins of long-term problems.

A thoughtful and stimulating read

This is a very enlightening cross-disciplinary look at where the French welfare state finds itself today. The author does a wonderful job of harpooning the self-delusional assumptions the French make about their government's social programs. Likely, this won't be warmly received in France, but challenging the status quo is no way to win popularity contests. The United States and Canada could do with a similar treatment from this author.

From a stylistic standpoint, I think it is important to note that this is not just another dry academic tome. The text is quite lively and there are more than a few colourful turns of phrase thrown in for good measure.

It's not a sit-down-and read, story book. It is a reference manual and should be used as such. Good info, very helpful.

Reed (The Jesse Jackson Phenomenon) doesn't have much patience with what he views as the mushy liberals of the Democratic Party and black intellectuals like Michael Dyson and Cornel West. In these essays (most of which have appeared in publications such as the Progressive and the Village Voice), Reed offers his bracing opinions on race and politics in the 1990s from a "left-critical perspective." Black "leadership" substitutes for popular mobilization, he argues, while nostalgia for black unity under segregation falsifies the past and serves reactionary interests. He finds consonance between the black establishment and Louis Farrakhan in that they consider the inner-city poor "morally defective," and contends that the white Left won't confront the complexity of black politics ("They simply do not see political differences among black people"). In perhaps the most memorable essay, Reed pungently analyzes what he calls the "crisis of black intellectual [life]" (in which a "lucky few," West and Henry Louis Gates Jr., for instance, direct themselves more to a white audience than to blacks). The author, a leader in the nascent Labor Party, values the primacy of class politics over so-called cultural or identity politics ("If we don't organize on a class basis, we'll be picked off one at a time, as we were with 'welfare reform' "), preferring "real" class politics, based on people's daily lives. But his snapshots of such organizing based on class are too briefly presented for readers to evaluate. Similarly, his forceful but too-brief argument against stigmatizing the "underclass" ("poor people are just like everyone else") invites a deeper critique of the work of those (e.g., Nicholas Lemann) whom he attacks.

Reed, who teaches African American studies and political science at the University of Illinois, Chicago, has long been a provocative contributor to the national conversation about race. Many of this volume's 30 essays are drawn from Reed's columns in The Progressive and The Village Voice. In the section "Issues in Black Public Life," Reed addresses segregation, anti-Semitism, the lack of a black political movement, O. J. Simpson, and Louis Farrakhan. In "Equality and Ideology in American Politics," he considers the black underclass, family values and welfare reform, and Herrnstein and Murray's The Bell Curve. In "The Question of Practice," Reed looks back at the Brown decision and at New Orleans' controversial Liberty Monument, examines ethnic studies in the academic world, and discusses "building solidarity." At the center of Reed's analysis is his belief that "understanding American politics and organizing effectively to operate within it require recognizing the centrality of class forces and dynamics in shaping consciousness and establishing both lines of cleavage and possibilities for solidarity." Well Argued

Highly recommended reading whether you agree with the author or not. A revealing quote from this book: "I do not want to hear another word about drugs or crime without hearing in the same breath about decent jobs, adequate housing and egalitarian education." Those are all addressed together, from the opposing point of view, in Heather MacDonald's "The Burden of Bad Ideas." Read them together and form your own opinion as to the cause of failure in urban America. Reed argues well but I think MacDonald wins in this debate.

Forceful and Honest

"Class Notes" should be read by everyone, especially those who identify with the left and care about the state of black politics. Reed maintains that he is toward the statist end of the left and he debunks the current conservative ideology that "Big government" is a failure. But Reed saves his best ammunition for so-called black leaders and intellectuals such as Louis Farrakhan,Jesse Jackson,Cornel West,and Henry Louis Gates Jr. In order for any progressive movement to succeced it needs to be class-based, but with a concern for those still suffering discrimination. This book is essential reading.

Class Notes: Posing as Politics

Adolph Reed looks at issues, getting past media representations and demagoguery to consistently, doggedly return the reader to the fact that poverty is not the fault of the poor, and the only way to improve things is to do the hard work of organizing active political bodies and force change. He is succinct, accurate, and appropriately scathing. Give this book to someone who gets their politics via the major media; it should at least make him or her angry.
