New Approach To Legal Translation, by Susan Sarcevic

One of the first attempts to present a comprehensive study of legal translation, this book is an interdisciplinary study in law and translation theory. It is not bound to any specific languages or legal systems, although emphasis is placed on translation between common law and civil law jurisdictions.

The main focus is on the translation of texts which are authoritative sources of the law; examples are cited primarily from statutes, codes and constitutions (Canada, Switzerland and Belgium), as well as instruments of the European Union and international treaties and conventions.

Dealing with theoretical as well as practical aspects of the subject matter, the author analyses legal translation as an act of communication in the mechanism of the law, thus making it necessary to redefine the goal of legal translation.

This book is intended for both lawyers and linguists, translation theorists, legal translators and drafters, legal lexicographers, as well as teachers and students of translation.

Written to be understood
By Anjiso
Well, this was a technical book that was actually written to be understood. The authors were able to say what needs to be said in just 150 pages. That was great. There is no need to stuff a book with junk. The great physicist Ernest Rutherford said, "If you can't explain your physics to a barmaid it is probably not very good physics". That is true. Indeed, Jim and Larry were able to explain S88 to barmaid! That was quite an achievement. This book worth the price.

Very good for S88 introduction ...
By Gregory Brylski
Very good insight into S88, considering there isn't much else on the market and the author had to learn it from scratch and even then talk to the ISA S88 committee members. After going through this book in detail, I'm amazed that the ISA S88 committee members didn't realize they were creating an abstract standard with terminology that is so general that it's not understandable. Jim Parshall - two thumbs up. ISA S88 committee - thumbs down for detachment from reality.

understanding this book was very easy and I would have liked it to explain more ...
By Pablo Sáez
I have been working with batch processes for 7 years and had heard a lot about S88. Because of that, understanding this book was very easy and I would have liked it to explain more deeply some of the points. Anyway, it awolled me to understand all the basic concepts and now I think I would be able to create a software that followed S88 and that inproved the way I define and program the processes.

How To Start A Small-Scale Microbrewery: A Primer, by Jasper Miller

This book is written for the following:

1. Those interested in starting a small 1 (Nano) to 10 bbl. microbrewery
2. Those who have somewhat limited resources and experience
3. Those who are willing to work hard, are handy, and dream big
4. Those who are just curious about the whole deal

This microbrewery primer will take you through the process from “Okay, I'm ready to go for it” through the business plan and paperwork requirements to setting up a brewhouse and finally to an operational microbrewery. Links and resources will be given throughout this primer so that you may expand this information into a more comprehensive understanding and approach to accomplish your goal. This book is organized in sections, not necessarily sequential steps. For example, you may be working on the business plan but will need information from Section III, Equipment and the Brewhouse. And so it follows that you will be working on more than one section concurrently. If you have partners, it is also a good idea to assign each person to spearhead specific sections, with input from all, of course.

Before you begin I suggest you do what my now business partner and I did our senior year of college: Relax, drink a good microbrew and dream about being owners of a microbrewery. Then read this book- all the way through without taking notes- to see what you're getting into. Then drink another brew. (By the way it helps a lot to have a partner or two on the journey to start your microbrewery.) Now proceed to Section I, knowing there will be answers to all of your questions. Cheers!

Good quick starter
By erik jan yntema
I bought this as an e-book because and I must say it is well readable even if you do not have a kindle.
Jasper gives a good overview of what it takes to set-up your business and how you can do this in a practical way.
The average home-brewer will be able to understand all off the more technical descriptions and it will help you figure out how you can do the set-up / scaling of your own brewery. It is full of links that bring you to all kind of companies and information that would have taken me weeks to find out by my self. Well worth the nine dollar. Thanks a lot.

Building a lap steel is easy
Making a lap steel guitar is a good way of starting to get into guitarbuilding. There are several factors that make building a lap steel easy. In fact, the most difficult part will be learning to play the instrument, but that's a different story.

Why building a lap steel is easy
No round-shaping of the neck required
A lap steel neck can be left square because the player doesn't have to grab around it to play the instrument.

No fretboard required
Although most lap steel guitars have an extra fretboard made of wood or metal the instrument can be played just as well without one. To help the player with orientation you can paint the fret markers directly onto the plank.

No fretboard radius required
If you make a fretboard, you can leave it flat. A fretboard radius is a matter of comfort on a normal guitar but wouldn't make sense on a lap steel.

No truss rod needed
The neck of a lap steel guitar doesn't have to be comfortable. Since the hands don't have to grab around it, the neck can be left quite thick and square. Such a thick neck will not bend under string load, so there's no need for a truss rod to correct any neck bow.

No frets required
There are no frets needed to define an exact vibrating length for the strings. Lap steel guitars owe their special sound to the fact that the slide can be placed anywhere between the nut and the end of the fretboard. The strings of a lap steel guitar run quite high above the fretboard and never touch it.

No fret leveling and crowning required
To help the player with orientation it is helpful to have fret markers on the fretboard or neck. Often the frets are just strips of wood that are inlaid flush with the fretboard. Although not necessary, a lot of lap steel guitars still have frets, but merely for reasons of appearance. Since the action is high, the strings won't touch the fretboard and no leveling and crowning of frets is required.

No setting of the action necessary
The strings usually run 13/32" (10mm) above the fretboard. There is no need for lengthy nut and saddle filing to achieve low string action. Fret buzzes are unknown to lap steel players.

No setting of the intonation
Because the strings are not pressed down on the fretboard when the guitar is played, there is no need for "setting the intonation". On conventional guitars, pressing down the strings results in a slight increase in pitch; to correct this effect, the scale length is increased by setting the string rests (saddles) on the bridge further back, a procedure commonly called "setting the intonation". On lap steel guitars all the saddles are placed at scale-length distance from the front of the nut.

Regardless of these numerous advantages, a lot of steps are the same as in building a conventional guitar.

Just what you need...
By Robert C. Lester
..to build your first Lap Steel. The book is well laid out, clear, and well suited to a beginners approach. I had never done any musical woodworking projects, and this book (Along with the guidance of some skilled woodworking friends) walked me comfortably through the steps to completing a good looking and good sounding lap steel. Very rewarding purchase. Can't recommend it enough.

It's pretty easy to build your own lap steel

The book is easy reading and enjoyable. I am making a steel guitar that is a mix of the first and second example. The dimensions are very helpful as is the suggested parts list. I would purchase this book again.

It's ALL in this one book.
By A Customer
As with is other book, Martin Koch tells you ALL you need to know to build a beautiful instrument.
From building 2 types of lap steel's from A to Z, to making the case and even making your own pickups, this book as it all.
This is my second book by Martin Koch and let me just say that his books are a gold mine of information from cover to cover.
Martin Koch also as a website that compliments his books where you can ask questions, see other instruments people have built and there are also good tools such as Fret Calculator and stuff.
Trust me......if you want to build your own instrument, you will not regret purchasing this book.

I don't claim to have any special knowledge of how the field of child psychology operates. I'm just an average Joe trying to make a living doing what child psychologists do. One of the most important things they do is read the work of other child psychologists. Over the two decades or so that I've been reading these works, I've developed a fairly comprehensive classification scheme for what I think are the most important research topics, who are the most influential child psychologists, and which are the most revolutionary scientific publications. In fact, I've gotten to the point that whenever I read the work of another child psychologist, the second thing I do is look over the References section (the first thing I do is read the title and abstract). The reason I turn to the references first is that I believe I can get a good sense of the tone, the purpose, and the outcome of the article, just by seeing who gets cited in it. My predictions are usually right on target.

But about 5 years ago, I began to wonder whether other child psychologists had developed their own mental classification schemes, and whether their schemes were similar to mine. For example, I wondered whether other researchers considered the works of Robert Fantz and Renée Baillargeon as revolutionary as I believed they were. So in the summer of 2000, I launched a major research project of my own in an attempt to uncover the major child psychology research projects published in the second half of the 20th century. I asked child psychologists from all walks of life to nominate and vote on the studies they believed were the Most Important, Most Revolutionary, Most Controversial, and Most Fascinating. This book describes the 20 Most Revolutionary Studies.

The project was a major undertaking, and I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the contributions of a number of generous individuals. I must first acknowledge the overwhelming effort put forth by Debbie Hoffman. Deb was involved in this project every step of the way; she pulled names from the Membership Registry of the Society for Research in Child Development, typed up mailing labels, taped gold coins to individual recruitment letters, helped tally the results, and reviewed my entire book for typos and grammatical errors. I am extremely grateful to her. Thanks also go to Chuck Moon, who helped me come up with the research design for the data collection portion of the project. Thanks are due to a number of individuals who read, commented on, or otherwise provided guidance for how I might approach individual chapters, including Timothy Anderson, Daniel Cruikshanks, Margaret Evans, Brian Haley, Michele Moser, and Ken Porada. Relatedly I thank a number of people who provided useful information: Steve Velazquez, Bob Berg, Ayako Tabusa, Xiaoming Huang, and Muthoni Kimemia. Thanks also to the following reviewers: Tara Kuther, Western Connecticut State University; Judy Payne, Murray State University; Joseph D. Sclafani, The University of Tampa; and Roger Van Horn, Central Michigan University. Finally, I wish to acknowledge a number of the Top 20 authors and their close acquaintances for giving me direction and suggestions for ways to approach the book; among these are Joe Fagan, Emmy Werner, Renee Baillargeon, Arnie Sameroff, and Ursula Bellugi.

A number of people deserve special mention for providing me with the mental fortitude to pursue the project: Esther Strahan for telling me my book-writing future was inevitable, Peg Smith for telling me it was about time I wrote a book, Wallace Dixon, Sr., for telling me book writing is where the real money is, Tirrr Lawson for outdoing me and writing his own book first, and Jennifer Gilliland for thier continued support and encouragement and for telling me I was a "great writer." Finally, special thanks with sugar on top go to my wife, Michele Moser, and my daughters, Rachel and Sarah, for giving me up on all those late, late nights when I went into the office and word-processed till the wee hours of the morning.

Amazon-Exclusive: Q&A with Editor-in-Chief Dennis Hall

What is the most challenging or memorable residential project you’ve worked on?
Designing my own home.

Why?
1. Really tough client.
2. No budget.
3. High client expectations
4. Have to live with the results for the last 19 years and think about all the things I would do differently.

Architects design houses, contractors build houses, and owners maintain and live in houses. That is the natural state of things. But when you design, build, and live in the same house, you have a unique perspective and only one person to blame (it is all my wife's fault). And, you learn from mistakes in a profound way (just kidding, Janice dear).

Houses are a lot like marriages. There are happy surprises and disappointing ones, and never enough money or time to do everything you want. In the end, it is not the big issues that determine happiness; it is the details that matter.

Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction is a book about getting the details right. While having Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction in your firm's library won't necessarily improve your marriage, why take that chance? I know I wish I had it 20 years ago.

What’s “new” about the new edition?
The minimum standard of care is compliance with building code. But with thousands of codes and standards, some conflicting with each other, how do you know you have not forgotten something? This new book informs and educates the reader on specific code requirements and how they can be applied.

Remember, our clients pay us because we have knowledge of building design and construction and know how to apply that knowledge to their situation. While no architect promises a perfect set of construction documents, this is often the expectation of the client. The better we are able to convey building information to the client, contractor, and building official, the happier the client will be. Is that not what we all want?

What new content are you excited to see specifically covered in the book?
As a forensic architect, one of the biggest problems we see is the lack of understanding of the design and construction of exterior vertical enclosures. There are three basic types of walls: barrier walls, drainage cavity walls, and pressure-equalized walls. Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction explains how each of these wall types work and the importance of the water-resistive barrier and flashing in drainage cavity and pressure-equalized walls. Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction also provides details with code cites for the design of exterior vertical enclosures of numerous construction materials including masonry, wood, stucco, and others.

Armed with the knowledge of how walls work and the related building code requirements, keeping the water out of your project and having a happy client is easier. It is also far more economical for the home owner, designer, and contractor.

Total satisfaction
By Peter Kampf
It is the best. The quick and concise references in all aspects of construction detailing, calculations and specifications is invaluable. I have been using it for many years. In 2000 I introduced and used the Architectural Graphic Standards and the AGS Interiors in Bhutan while designing a hotel. The AGS belongs in every Architectural office and in various related offices. The completeness of information more than met my expectations.

Use of the Ramsey Sleeper
By B. Hines
This book has all the information I wanted and needed. I recommend it highly to anyone trying to struggle through a set of drawings. It does seem that it is organized differently than the one I had previously. My old one seemed a little easier to use.
