(Book). Born in New Orleans in 1894, Warren "Baby" Dodds became one of the greatest drummers of that city's early jazz tradition. This lively autobiography, first published more than 30 years ago and long unavailable, is the result of a series of interviews Dodds taped with Larry Gara a few years before his death in 1959. With disarming candor, Dodds recalls his remarkable musical career, which spanned more than four decades and took him from New Orleans' famed Storyville district to Mississippi riverboats, to Chicago and New York. Dodds performed and recorded with some of the most famous musicians of his time King Oliver, Kid Ory, Bunk Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, among others and his recollections of these men and the music they created add much to our knowledge of jazz history. Dodds also discusses his own style and philosophy of music, revealing himself as a dedicated artist who placed a high value on craftsmanship, versatility and originality, and whose love of the jazz world never waned. If you play the drums professionally in any way, you should read this

A small read of only 106 pages in the paperback but still one of the most important books on drumming ever published. This is the story of the father of the modern drum kit, Baby Dodds who gave this series of interviews in the 1940's. Obviously you will enjoy it more if you are a fan of jazz, but really anyone who plays the drums should love this book of classic stories and reminisces. There is very little information available at all about the period of jazz discussed extensively here by Baby, i.e. before and during ragtime, or "syncopation" as Baby calls it, which makes this book a unique, historical document.

This book is a great resource for those wanting to look at the history of drum set performance and early jazz. The man can lay claim to being the inspiration for the Hi-hat (sock cymbal).

K-Gr 2-In this tale retold by a contemporary Inuit storyteller, an orphaned youngster is repeatedly abandoned on an ice floe by the seal hunters of his tribe who hope for his death. He is eventually rescued by a polar bear in human form who takes the boy to his own community and teaches him the skills necessary to survive in this harsh land. When he is able to hunt and fight, he is returned to his own kind, having been taught how to become a man. Lovely watercolor illustrations dominated by blue and white hues place readers into the chilly landscape and lend credence to this simple, but cruel tale. The lesson of self-reliance is implied in this stilted translation, but not made explicit enough for younger children. The boy shows no gratitude to his animal rescuers, seems to harbor no resentment against his human tribesmen, and has an unknown future. About the Author

Sakiasi Qaunaq has lived most of his life in the Arctic Bay area. His grandmother told him stories as a child and fostered in him a love for traditional legends. In his youth the stories were told for entertainment, but today he feels their retelling is crucial to sustaining Inuit traditions and culture. Eva Widermann is a freelance illustrator and concept artist whose work has been published in a wide variety of books, magazines, and games. Her work has become renowned for its realistic and evocative edge.

A "must read" for anyone interested in anesthesia!

One of the most effective ways to devalue a profession, or any group for that matter, is to ignore their history. Anesthesia texts written for primarily a physician audience have for decades systematically avoided mention of the considerable contributions made to the specialty of anesthesia by Nurse Anesthetists. This book tackles, and successfully masters the task of tracing the development of anesthesia as a nursing specialty from the 19th century to the 1980's. The author also chronicles the multiple, albeit unsuccessful, attempts of organized medicine to stifle the development CRNA's, the profession that has been providing the majority of anesthesia care to Americans for over a century. The book is a "must read" for anyone, nurse, physician or patient, who has an interest in the subject of anesthesia. It is worth the search to find the "out of print" work. Hopefullly, it will be reprinted!

Excellent account of historical aspects of the Nurse Anesthesia Profession and the AANA

The Nurse Anesthetist of today truly stands on the shoulders of Giants. This book is a wonderful rendition of the history of nurses providing anesthesia in the United States and of the history and beginnings of the professional organization known as the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. It is an excellent piece for anyone considering the CRNA profession and should be a primary reading requirement for all programs. Excellent story. Fantastic history.
