Best textbook ever!!

This is probably the best textbook I have ever read. Seriously loved this book. The helpful tips were great, and it really helped me learn the material and solidify concepts. Pharmacology is already a hard subject. This book just helps to cover basics in a digestible way.

About the Author

Dr. Murari P. Singh (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is the President of Safe Technical Solutions, Inc (SAFETSOL). Dr. Singh has been involved in the design, development and analysis of industrial turbomachinery for more than thirty years with Turbodyne Corporation, Dresser Industries, Dresser-Rand Company, GE CONMEC and most recently with GE Oil & Gas as Consulting Engineer. Dr. Singh has extensive knowledge and experience with fatigue and fracture mechanics, stress and vibration of structures, reliability, life analysis, probabilistic analysis. His practical application experience includes a variety of rotating equipments including Warm Gas and FCC Expanders, Steam Turbines and Centrifugal Compressors. He developed the widely used SAFE diagram for reliability evaluation of turbine blades. The SAFE diagram methodology is superior to other current methods in providing clear analytical and predictive information. This concept has been applied to other turbomachineries. It is a significant contribution to design methods and vibration technology for the evaluation of turbine blade reliability. For many years, Dr. Singh has been involved in (developing and teaching) application of lifing strategy to many mechanical components, this includes hcf, lcf, creep, fracture mechanics. Probabilistic estimation is used to estimate risk in design. He is the co-author of the book "Steam Turbine, Design, Application, and Rerating", second edition published by McGraw-Hill Co.

Dr. George M. Lucas, PE, is a registered Professional Engineer with over 34 years of experience in the design, analysis and operation of steam turbines and large rotating equipment. As Director of Engineering for Dresser-Rand’s Wellsville Steam Turbine Operation, George was directly responsible for product design, steam path engineering, turbine performance, and manufacturing engineering for their custom engineered process drive steam turbines and steam turbine generators. He was directly responsible for the design of over 100 custom engineered steam turbines and contributed to the design and development of several Engineered Steam Turbine product families. Mr. Lucas was Design Project Leader for the joint Dresser-Rand/EPRI project that resulted in the successful commissioning of the 110 MW gas turbine/expander train at PowerSouth Electric Cooperative’s McIntosh Compressed Energy Storage Plant. Mr. Lucas received B. Sc. (1975) and M. Eng. (1976) degrees from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He holds two U.S. patents and has authored technical papers on topics including the use of advanced seals in steam turbines, compressed air energy storage and the development of advanced steam turbines for syn-gas compressor drive service. Mr. Lucas is currently an independent consultant serving OEM and end-user clients in oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing industries.

Unique Ind Steam Turbine Book

The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" provides a unique compendium of all concepts, basic analytical formulas and techniques needed to cope with design of industrial steam turbines flowpath (blades) components.
While there is a wider literature on large steam turbines applied in power generation, very few books are covering or focusing on industrial steam turbines for mechanical drive applications. Mechanical drive applications are especially demanding in requiring to steam turbines capability to adapt to variable speed and variable loads, challenging the design of flowpath components. Present book from Dr. Singh is one of the few books covering these challenges and presenting a very good summary of 30 years expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design.
The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" is very well covering the challenges of design for dynamic behavior and vibration of industrial steam turbines blades. It moves from guidance to vibration behavior of bladed disk system (chapter 7), to damping concepts and damper system design (chapter 6), to methods (simplified and detailed) to estimate dynamic stresses (Chapter 7), to guidance to perform High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades including the effects of residual stresses and giving useful guidance on fatigue resistance correction factors (Chapter 8), to a review of manufacturing methods and design solutions (Chapter 3).
The book represents a basic reading for those who are approaching the design of blades for variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

Good technical content, but needs much better editing

The folks who wrote this obviously know what they are doing, but the text is either poorly edited, or written by someone for whom English is a second language. The text has a large number of grammatical errors, dropped words, etc. It can require several readings of a paragraph to grasp what is being said. In addition, there are a number of instances where mathematical terms are not defined (or defined in translated English), making it difficult to understand what is being presented. Apart from these foibles, it is a very good book.

The book from Dr. Singh and Mr. Lucas is a book focused on the key design factors and challenges for steam turbine/ turbomachinery equipment : the flowpath blading. They present a very good summary of 30+ years of expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design. As steam turbines develop further into new applications where cyclic duty and part-power settings are even more important(such as in the concentrated solar power production field), the relevance to this blade design knowledge and suitable guidance for acceptable design is even more significant.

This text book covers the overall design knowledge of industrial steam turbines blades/ disks including a very methodic and detailed review of dynamic behavior and vibrations. The book builds knowledge very progressively from guidance on blade materials and construction, to overall stress and damage mechanisms, to methods to estimate dynamic stresses in performing High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades, to a final assessment of blade life improvement options and summarizing the life cycle risks.

Although there are some areas where editing of text could be improved, this book is a great technical reference and baseline for all those who are approaching the design of blades for application in variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

Love it or hate it, it's the plain truth is you want to get married and actually BE happy!

This book has been the 'magic key' I had been desperately searching for in a pile of self-help books and hours of therapy. For the past 2 years I had been obsessively trying to figure out 'what was wrong with me' (and him) that caused our really wonderful, fulfilling relationship to deteriorate into a devastating mess and failure.

Our relationship failure didn't look, sound or feel like any of our friends' relationship failures. Theirs were obvious: cheating, alcoholism and marrying for reasons other than love in the first place were some of the 'normal' and understandable reasons to end a marriage or relationship. Ours was not like that. We had all the right elements: incredible physical chemistry, humor, affection, mental compatibility, emotional compatibility, similar values spiritually and socially, you name it, we had it. We enjoyed doing many of the same things, we enjoyed one another's company and there was no cheating of any sort. So what on earth happened to us? Losing that relationship when it had so many wonderful elements was absolutely the worst pain I have ever experienced, and I knew I had to dig deep and figure out how it happened because if I didn't, I wouldn't survive the pain again. Since I am not the type to turn bitter and just buy a cat, I delved into the bottomless pit of the 'why's...until I finally found the answer in this book.

The basic premise is really simple: There MUST be a 'masculine energy' person (who gives, protects, and is RESPECTED) and a 'feminine energy person' (who 'gives back', receives joyously and is CHERISHED) in order for the relationship to work. If you both want to be in charge, you will fight for the masculine position. If you both want to have your feelings cherished as your top priority, you will fight for the feminine position. If you must be BOTH respected for your mind and want to lead AND insist on having your feelings cherished--that is the epitome of NARCISSISM, and Dr. Allen believes you will be UNABLE TO MATE SUCCESSFULLY. So many reviewers seem to have missed the point of the book by having their feathers ruffled by the concept of submission to the male that they also missed the hundreds of times she reiterates that you can CHOOSE which energy to be, and you can also NEGOTIATE with your mate after the relationship is established for role reversals in areas that both of you agree to. She is NOT in any way suggesting that we as women should suppress our minds or needs or feelings in deference to the male. We can and should express our FEELINGS to our masculine mate. As the man, he should express his THOUGHTS to his feminine woman, and ASK HER HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT THEM. Dr. Allen teaches us how to do this so as to actually get our needs met. The male MUST cherish the female's feelings above his own, and HE MUST DO THIS FIRST because a woman will be UNABLE to feel safe submitting to him and UNABLE to show respect for a man who has not FIRST shown her she is safe to do so. If a woman loves her man more than she loves herself (my problem) he will use and abuse her because she allows it.

Of course, the more frustrated and 'uncherished' I felt, the more resentful and angry I became, not understanding that I would never be able to give him enough love, generosity, effort or sacrifice to get him to meet my needs. What I was doing SEEMED to me to be feminine and loving, but it turns out those things were actually the masculine trait of selflessly giving. No wonder I didn't like being in that role! A successful relationship is like a battery: there needs to be a positive giver (male) and a negative receiver (female) in order for there to be a 'charge' or connection. It won't matter how hard you try, because without both ends of the battery, you will never get a darn thing from it.

This was the problem in my relationship. My boyfriend, who appeared very cherishing, giving and protecting at first, gradually slipped into his more feminine self and revealed what he was to me: a narcissist who would not give OR give back. He needed to have BOTH energies (my respect and also my cherishing) being given to him. I did it as long as I could, but despite the fact that we had all this 'wonderfulness' and commonality, he simply couldn't take the full masculine role I needed him to, and he left. Of course this left me absolutely AGONIZING over what more I could have done (actually, as Dr. Allen points out, I needed to do much LESS) to save our relationship.

I really must express my deep relief and gratitude for this book. I am naturally a feminine energy person, and instinctively behave in feminine ways so I got a lot of it 'right'. But when it came to asking for things I wanted or needed, I did it completely WRONG and was totally baffled as to why my asking was met with such resistance. Men take requests as attempts at control, even when they aren't. Dr. Allen shows us a better way.

I needed HONEST ANSWERS about what causes relationships to fail or succeed, and how to get my needs met by my man, and also meet his. She also showed me that what I thought a man wanted was not the case at all. I am so glad I now know this information. Thank you Dr. Allen. I am certain you have saved me from another round of hideous pain.

While I don't agree with everything in the book, there are some things I've used in my dating experience from this book that have worked well. It helped me understand men better and relax more. I read it with Steve Harvey's, "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man." His book got my mind in the right place, and her book gave me some concrete ways to behave. Since I've started deliberately bringing the "feminine energy" by choice/preference, the man in my life is less passive and has begun initiating and planning events. As a by-product, I've become less selfish and more respectful. Didn't see the problem before reading the books.

Amazing and eye opening view on relationships! As a female alpha, I never realized that was my biggest issue in relationships. I want an a man's man/an alpha but he needs the opposite so Pat Allen's book really helped me see how I can make adjustments.

When I first heard of it I was offended and thought it was so stupid but once I read it it ALL MADE SENSE. And really, if you want different results in your dating life then you have to do something different.

I also go to her seminars here in LA, totally love her and her advice!

IN THIS FASCINATING EXPLORATION of the cultural models of manhood, When Men Are Women examines the world of nomadic Gabra people, a camel-herding society in East Africa. Gabra men denigrate women and feminine things, yet regard their most prestigious men as women. In Gabra society all men eventually become d'abella, or ritual experts with feminine identities. A d'abella does not look or act like an ordinary woman, but in many significant ways "he" is a "she": the d'abella is said, in prayers and blessings, to "give birth" to Gabra tradition, and since this tradition is given credit for both rain and fertility, the d'abella gives birth to life itself.

Wood's study draws from structuralism and psychoanalytic theory to probe the meaning, role, and significance of gender in Gabra society. When Men Are Women provides a multifaceted view of gender as a cultural construction independent of sex, but nevertheless fundamentally related to it. By turning men into women, Gabra confront the dilemmas and ambiguities of nomadic life. The Gabra provide illuminating insight into our own culture's understanding of gender and its function in society.

Very Interesting Piece of the Gabra Tradition, Probably Lacking One Crucial Insight

I read the assumingly original paperback edition of 1999. It is based on altogether 22 months of fieldwork done between 1991 and 1993 among the Gabra camel-herders, who live in Kenya and Ethiopia. The book offers 225 regular text pages, including almost 20 monochrome pictures.

The title suggests a focus on gender studies. About a most unusual concept. It is not about men who dress like women. Not about men who behave like women. And not about men fulfilling any of the same functions as women. I don't blame you, should you ask, what may possibly be left. Well, John Colman Wood needs more than 200 pages to explain that, but in a nutshell: certain men supplement women, retaining the blurry distinction between addition and replacement. To use the vocabulary of the author. In prayers and blessings they are said to "give birth" to Gabra tradition, once they have become "d'abella". Which all men become, should they get old enough. In other words, the d'abella tradition is an institutionalized part of religion. Hence d'abella are not female, but women. Many rules apply to them which do not apply to anyone else. You may have figured out by now that reading a review does not enlighten as much as reading the book itself.

About men giving birth in this non-transgender context, please read Pregnant Man (Social Orders) about a similiar concept in medieval Europe. Which marks the final threshold of patriarchy usurping power from matriarchy by symbolically transferring the birth concept, which was necessary for legitimacy of power. John C. Wood does NOT go into this notion, which seems to be obvious as he explains that Gabra men denigrate women and feminine things, yet regard their most prestigious men as women. That's why I have subtracted one star from the otherwise well-written book.

About the Author
The Editor: Dan Michman earned his Ph.D. in Jewish history from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is Professor of Modern Jewish History and Incumbent of the Spiegel Family Chair in Holocaust Research at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. He also serves as Chief Historian of Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Remembrance and Research Authority of Israel. His books include The Jewish Refugees from Germany in the Netherlands, 1933-1940; Days of Holocaust and Reckoning; Het Liberale Jodendom in Nederland, 1929-1943; and Die Historiographie der Shoah aus jüdischer Sicht.

This was awful

Why would a writer set her story in the Regency Period and then say that she has decided "to forego conformity to...regency standards of decorum in favor of presenting strong...memorable characters"? As I tried to read this book, I concluded that she is too unfamiliar with those standards and with the language and terminology of the era, and that the so-called memorable characters were so crass and self-centered that they should be forgotten, not remembered.
This story is shallow, the language ranges from stilted ( in the first few chapters, the word "gaze" was used ad nauseum"), to half-correct (two characters were planning to "cry out" to break a betrothal, and the use of titles was far off the mark). Finally, the writer resorts to the frequent use of the F-word, and utterly loses credibility.
I confess I gave up after chapter 23. I just couldn't finish the final 12 or 13, and I saw little likelihood that those chapters would redeem this work.

deserves to be on the newyork times best sellers list

If you love romance then this is the perfect read. highly recommended. I read the preview on wattpad and then purchased it immediately on amazon. The story is a love triangle but extremely well written. Extremely happy ending and all the characters got their well deserved partners. And in addition to romance you dont want to miss the humor and the hilarious situations. I was actually having a hearty laugh while reading it. I wish you had few more chapters dedicated to jeremy's and cassie's childhood pranks and I would like to know how he actually spoils her in those early years when richard wasn't there. Please read the second book in the series as well , 'heaven sent the wrong one', it is equally good or may be even better. Thank you to the writer for entertaining us.

I first read this novel in wattpad, I didn't know that it was only a rough draft of the story but when I started reading it I had to know what was the ending. The very same moment, I registered myself in kindle and sign up in amazon just to purchase the book. Gosh! it is an amzing story! I can't stop turning the page because every moments seems to be unfathomable. This is unique, heart throbbing Romantic Story. I suggested it in my friends and they too love this!

I gave five stars rating since that's what my heart tells me. I can't lie!
