A Good, But Disappointing, Intro to Paul

Anthony Thiselton is a well-known figure in contemporary biblical studies, a man crossing a number of specializations: New Testament exegete, systematician, philosopher (especially as it relates to hermeneutics). In this little volume (162 pages of text) the reader is treated to a little bit of everything: a summary of Paul's life and teaching (Thiselton the NT scholar), forays into Paul's contribution to Christian doctrine (Thiselton the systematician), and even a final chapter on Paul and postmodern thought (Thiselton the philosopher). Thiselton is a rare breed in that he is quite capable in all of these areas, and even rarer for offering The Living Paul, a book written for those perhaps unfamiliar with Paul and the debates surrounding his writings.

For much of the book, Thiselton succeeds in providing an informed and stimulating "introduction to the Apostle's life and thought" (as the subtitle goes). His opening chapters on "obstacles to appreciating Paul" are helpful, particularly his discussion of "new creation" (which is essentially Thiselton fleshing out the "already/not yet" in Paul's writings).

One helpful aspect of the book was how Thiselton situated Paul the letter writer in his discussion of Paul the travelling missionary pastor. This helps the reader understand how letters such as 1-2 Thessalonians and the Corinthians letters fit into Paul's ministry as a missionary rather than seeing them as detached from his church planting (after all, Paul the Letter Writer and Paul the Missionary both fall under his role as Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles). Unfortunately, Thiselton does not carry this out for all of Paul's letters, including overviews of some within various chapters. Because of this, this book is not the ideal place to get an overview of each Pauline letter, but it does help to tie the letters into his broader ministry and theology, something that can be lost with other approaches.

Chapters 5, 6 & 7 showcase Thiselton's abilities as a theologian. With admirable clarity he demonstrates how Paul sets the stage for later articulations of the Trinity, noting that neither Jesus nor the Spirit are created beings in Pauline theology, and that God, Jesus and the Spirit co-operate in remarkable ways (in creation, redemption, prayer, and so on). There are a couple points that will cause discomfort for some readers: his reliance on Moltmann's understanding of God co-suffering with Jesus, and his claim that many have an understanding of spiritual gifts that is "too supernatural" (I know of many missionaries and third-world believers who would laugh at this claim). I also found it interesting that Thiselton, while engaging multiple scholars, does not interact with Gordon Fee's massive book on the Holy Spirit in Paul's letters. But all in all I found these chapters stimulating and creatively presented.

Perhaps my favorite chapter (16) was his treatment of eschatology. He ably and concisely demonstrates the weakness of many contemporary evangelical approaches. "Paul is less interested in individual destiny, or survival of death, and `heaven', than in the three great corporate and cosmic events of the resurrection, the last judgement, and the Parousia of Christ" (p135). He also rejects the approach of Bultmann which sees eschatological passages as dealing strictly with present behavior, as well as attempts to equate Paul's hope with "secular progressivism." His discussion of the resurrection of the body and Christ's return explains Paul's thought clearly without losing the audience at hand. If someone is looking for a succinct treatment of 1 Corinthians 15 to recommend, this is it.

The last chapter on "Paul and postmodernity" was an interesting read, though I'm afraid that someone without at least a basic familiarity to postmodern philosophy will be easily lost. If this book were being used in a church study group, it would be best to have someone on hand well versed in these discussions to explain the issues and why they matter.

This book, as good as it is, is not without some problems, as I see them. First, the constant reference to the disputed nature of some of the Pauline corpus (Colossians, Ephesians, the Pastoral Epistles) gets tiresome quickly. I would much prefer Thiselton note the debate early in the book, chose a side and stick with it. Instead, he annoys the reader with "if we allow Pauline authorship of Ephesians" and "the perhaps deutero-Pauline Pastorals" type comments throughout the book.

Second, there were a few times when Thiselton would refer to a scholar, but never cite that person's work. Thus, while I now know that Terence Donaldson defends the "New Perspective on Paul," I know neither who Terence Donaldson is nor what he has written on the subject. Why mention him at all?

Lastly, the clarity with which Thiselton writes (praised above) is inconsistent. Maybe I was tired, but while reading his chapter on justification, I got confused- and I'm familiar with the discussion! While a scholar will appreciate the brief summary, I have no idea how any layperson (the audience of the book, mind you), with little-to-no orientation to the discussion, would be able to keep up. The problem is that Thiselton spends too much time surveying the various approaches (this happens in other chapters, but it kills this one). There were simply too many names thrown about to be helpful. What I wanted was Thiselton's thoughts on Paul's doctrine of justification (after all, I'm reading Thiselton's book!), but had trouble sifting through the discussion to discern his view. Interestingly, I'd make the same criticism about his massive commentary on 1 Corinthians.

Does Thiselton succeed in offering an accessible guide to Paul's life and thought? For the most part, yes. There are portions of the book that are simply outstanding and would benefit anyone who reads it. But there are other points when I'm just not sure he hits the target audience. The teacher in the local church (which is what I do and the perspective from which I write this review) would do well to refer to The Living Paul in preparation and could even have certain chapters picked out for church members to read, either leaving out the more confusing portions, or taking extra time to explain them.

An encyclopedic introduction to Paul.

The Living Paul

Subtitled, An Introduction to The Apostle's Life and Thought, this book lives up to its title.
Written by Anthony C. Thiselton, professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham, The Living Paul will be a helpful addition to any Bible student's library.
The first four chapters deal with Paul as a person, preacher, writer, apostle, etc. and introduce us to the man.
The following chapters deal with Pauline thought. Referencing various theologians and various viewpoints time and again, this book seeks to draw from learned men for the purpose of presenting Paul to us, and has done a good job for a book that is an introduction.
What I appreciate the most of this book is the arrangement of it. While I appreciate its content, and benefit from it, the arrangement is very helpful. Not only does it provide a bibliography, but a good index. The arranging of the chapters is well done, too. One only need to go to the table of contents to determine where he shall find that aspect of Paul's thought he wishes to consider. In that sense this book is a mini encyclopedia of Pauline thought and doctrine.
Of special interest is the fact that the author deals with much modern thought as he deals with Pauline thought. The New Perspective on Paul is discussed as well as postmodernism. The latter shows how relevant Paul is to today's issues.
The con is that I believe there are many who would be put off by the fact that the author does not see Paul as a complementarian when it comes to the roles of men and women. While I think Paul was, I do not see this as a reason to reject the whole book.
The Living Paul will not only be a read-through-at-once book, but also a good reference book.

A Good Intro to Paul

Paul is always an interesting figure to discuss and opinions can be very divided on him. Still, if you are going to talk about the New Testament and the rise of early Christianity, it is essential that you talk about Paul. Thiselton's book is an aim to bring an easily readable work to the layman audience to better understand Paul. He takes a number of issues and looks to see what Paul says about them.

The book starts with simply looking at the life of Paul. What is the relationship with Paul and Jesus? For instance, a number of people think that Jesus could have very well had this great idea and then Paul came along and messed everything up. Was this true? What did it mean for Paul to be an apostle to the Gentiles? Who was the man Paul and what was his methodology for going through the Mediterranean world and spreading Christianity? There are many of us that like to look at the teachings of Paul without considering Paul the man. We could perhaps better realize how seriously he took the teachings of Jesus if we realize how much he went through to share them.

But of course, doctrine has to be there. We in the West do tend to like that. Thiselton takes a number of issues. Some of them are ones that we would expect to see regularly, such as the Holy Spirit and the person of Jesus and looking to see if there's Trinitarianism in the writings of Paul. Others are definitely worth mention but sometimes ones we don't emphasize enough, though there are no doubt groups out there in Christianity that do. These would be his views on baptism and the Lord's Supper. Thiselton also writes on the ethics of Christianity especially including our sexual ethics and Paul was well ahead of his time with those.

Naturally, there are issues related to salvation, the nature of the church, and eschatology. These are all big debates today and Thiselton does present some of the latest work and speaks about it, such as looking at the idea of justification that is presented by N.T. Wright. He also deals with some objections such as the idea that Paul uses the term "we" in 1 Thess. 4 to describe what happens when Jesus returns and asks if Paul was off on his timing.

Some might be surprised that the last section in the book is a look at Paul and postmodernism. There were ideas back in the time of Paul that could be considered postmodern or at least pre-postmodern (There's an odd concept to think about) just like there was a proto form of Gnosticism going around in Paul's day. Thiselton looks at some of the postmoderns today and sees what Paul would have to say in relation to their claims about reality.

Thiselton's read is one that will help inform the layman on the life of Paul. There were times I would have liked a little bit more and the pace seemed to move a bit slowly for me, but much of the information is quite good and would be helpful to any student wanting to study Paul.

angry, dazzling - a beacon pointing home

This brief and dazzling essay plumbs the depths of human selfishness to distill an abiding message for this and all times. Lopez has a distinctive ability to appraise the beauty of nature and culture and to highlight the links between the two which can strengthen us as individuals and societies. The message of biophilia, explored by EO Wilson, has not been articulated more strongly.

Nine bucks for a 58-page essay on Kindle is way too much money

Two decades after the book was published, the concentration of wealth in the hands of the few has grown worse. Today the destruction of the physical world Lopez describes is mirrored in the slow destruction of hope in people.

Despite making only 12 feature films in 40 years, Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928) is arguably the greatest living American filmmaker, the principal creative force behind such movies as Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. He is famous for his reclusiveness and eccentricity. Although this biography falls short of its stated purpose to be the first complete account of Kubrick's private life, it succeeds in presenting a convincing portrait of a man who is utterly devoted to every aspect of filmmaking, down to poster design. LoBrutto (Elia Kazan: Film Director), a film professor at the School of Visual Arts in N.Y.C., provides an exhaustively researched and detailed account of the making of Kubrick's films, including long interviews with many of the actors, writers and film craftsmen who have worked with the director over the years. Kubrick comes across as a soft-spoken tyrant in full command of every detail who somehow manages to win and keep the respect of those who work for him. For the true film buff, there's an astonishing amount of technical information, but there's also a good deal of illuminating backstage human interest?Kubrick cutting Kirk Douglas's final close-up in Spartacus as a joke, beating George C. Perspectives on Stanley Kubrick. Stanley Kubrick is the acclaimed Bronx-born, British-based director of such notable films as Paths of Glory, Spartacus, and Dr. Strangelove. Among those who have admirably analyzed his oeuvre are Michael Ciment (Kubrick, 1980. o.p.) and Thomas Allen Nelson (Kubrick: Inside a Film Artist's Maze, LJ 4/15/82). Because Kubrick has directed only Full Metal Jacket (1987) since those books were published, these new evaluations will supplement rather than supersede them. Falsetto's work contains an introduction to Kubrick's career, a complete filmography, 22 essays (one by Kubrick himself), and four interviews, including the 1968 Playboy discussion of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Academic evaluations are complemented by nuts-and-bolts articles about the groundbreaking special effects of 2001 and use of the Steadicam camera on The Shining. The only sour note is "Full Metal Jacket: The Unravelling of Patriarchy," used by its author to snipe at Margaret Thatcher and a British commission on language. Contrast this with its intelligible companion piece, Thomas Doherty's "Full Metal Genre: Kubrick's Vietnam Combat Movie." LoBrutto's book is the first full biography of its subject. Although the reclusive director did not grant him an interview, LoBrutto gained the cooperation of childhood and adult friends and associates and gathered a truly vast amount of background material from primary sources (school records, marriage certificates, letters) and secondary sources (books, obituaries, reviews). Regrettably, his editors have allowed every bit of the information LoBrutto collected to remain in the text. Although much of the detail is welcome, the needless adjectives ("masterful Hamlet"), minutiae (hour of birth of his first wife), and plot synopses that should have been in the filmography often make this tedious reading. The best Kubrick Bio (that i've read, so far)

Upfront: I'm not an expert, but I've been a fan of Kubrick and his films for decades.

Stanley Kubrick is a remarkable subject but I hate the biographies that fawn over him as some perfect god-like wunderkind.

What's the truth about Stanley kubrick?

Lobrutto does a good job here relying on interviews from people who worked with or knew Kubrick personally, that are mined from a variety of sources, and overall provide the most detailed and best documented personal history I've read to date.
A clearer portrait emerges of who Stanley Kubrick was and how he accomplished some of his filmmaking art. I believe Lobrutto shoots strait most of the time - and even includes some of the dark side of Kubrick's obsessive work ethic, but his bias is more often: jaw dropping awe over Stanley Kubrick the superman.

In any event this is a must read for any serious student of Stanley Kubrick. It contains so much amazing stuff that I felt compelled to buy and own it - so I could use it as a reference work - and savor some of the more fascinating pieces of the Kubrick puzzle.
I wish there were several more good books on Kubrick but I can only recommend one: Kubrick by Michael Herr.

A filmography more than a biography

Published in 1999, prior to the release of "Eyes Wide Shut" and the death of his subject, Stanley Kubrick, Vincent LoBrutto's biography arrived, however unfairly, at the wrong time. Since Kubrick did not grant LoBrutto the kind of access a strong biography needs, he had to do the nasty gruntwork that makes biographical writing, particularly of the deceased, such a demanding, but ultimately rewarding adventure. We can only speculate, but now that Kubrick has been dead for nearly eight years, that perhaps Christiane Kubrick and their daughters would grant access into the secretive, obsessive world that made Kubrick such a mythic filmmaking figure.

Instead, we have a text that owes to LoBrutto's extensive knowledge of cinema more than it does to the insight of Stanley Kubrick. The book starts off poorly, reading like a catalog of events and dates, lacking any real musical sensibility for his use of the English language. LoBrutto hits his stride when describing the making of Kubrick's breakthrough film "The Killing." From there, LoBrutto's research into the depths of Kubrick's approach to filmmaking is rewarding. We learn about Kubrick's use of specific movie cameras, lenses, his approach to scoring films, "needle-dropping," his approach to lighting and his encyclopedic absorption of the subject matter pertaining to the films he made.

However, as a "biography," a study in human character, LoBrutto's book is thin. We learn little about Kubrick's attitudes towards his Jewish heritage. His first two marriages are passed over without any real depth. His obsessive nature and the creation of his own closed-off world, akin a filmmaker's Xanadu, are provided little to no psychological depth or inquiry. Kubrick comes across in LoBrutto's text as a reserved, calm guy who really didn't antagonize anybody. This overly consistent portrayal of his subject leads me to believe that, since Kubrick was still living at the time the author was writing this book, that LoBrutto was fearful of getting sued or blacklisted if he wrote anything too critical of the director. For these reasons, the book does not receive my overwhelming recommendation. But for aspiring directors, this books is a marvel, providing wonderful glimpses into the habits, approaches and skillsets of America's greatest film director.

Biography or trivia book?

This book does not fit the description of "biography." It is more of a "filmography" with some personal tidbits thrown in occasionally. In effect, this book merely became a scattered 600 page trivia offering. I admire the amount of research done on the book, but many times throughout the detail is a bit too excessive (eg- saying that Big Macs were often the food of choice during the making of the Shining-did we really need to know that?) This book has little to do with Kubrick the person (as a "biography" should) and has more to do with Kubrick the director. The chapters are utterly repetitive. Every chapter starts out with these words: "After his (such and such) last film Kubrick fell back into his pre-production mode." The chapter on the Shining was pathetic, after seeing "the making of the Shining" on DVD, its obvious that LoBrutto based that entire chapter on that documentary. I have admired and loved Kubrick's work most of my life, and waited a long time for this book only to be let down tremendously. My personal opinion is that LoBrutto rushed this book instead of fine tuning it and diggng deeper into Kubrick's life in order to be the first one to publish a Kubrick biography. I think more research of Kubrick the person needs to be done and then fused with these facts to make one hell of a book. Considering his reclusive lifestyle though, that may never happen. As it stands, this is probably the best Kubrick biography out there. But other reviewers have had the same reading experience I had...I just couldnt finish reading the darn thing. Its sad, considering the subject matter.

Great and highly effective decision method!

I have found the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to be one of the best, intriguing, and certainly fairly easy to communicate method to aid me on multi-criteria multi-objectives decision problems.
The book contains a wealth of examples from some decades (!) of practical experiences with AHP.
The book presents some "rules of thumb" (read: approximate methods) to estimate the final "priority vectors" ranking and sorting out the different alternatives to be decided, but will give the mathematically inclined reader a thorough (read: tough, at least college level in linear algebra!) introduction into the inner workings of Eigenvalue computation for priority matrices.
And I definitely appreciate the *original* comments of the founder of AHP to any other's comments on the subject.

Stunning. Captivating. Sensual. Distinctive. Stylish. Words alone can't describe David Downton's exquisite illustrations, nor the majestic muses who make up this sumptuous collection of over 150 portraits of the world's most beautiful women. Distinctive, contemporary beauties such as Dita Von Teese, Cate Blanchett and Linda Evangelista to timeless icons like Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling and Carmen Dell’Orefice grace the pages of this elegantly designed and appropriately large-format monograph.

Downton is the world’s preeminent fashion illustrator for over 15 years, and recognized internationally for his work with Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Chanel, Tiffany’s New York, Harrods, Lancome & the V&A Museum. What sets his distinctive portraits apart is his ability to accurately translate the depth of beauty and soul of each of his female subjects with an economy of line deftly executed with brush, ink, pen and hints of graphite or charcoal. Every line, mark, stroke and shade of color is deliberate, while spontaneous at the same time. There’s a graphic abstraction found in his work where calculated, textural brushstrokes and the interplay between positive & negative space invite the eye to linger and explore every detail. This modern quality found in his compositions is equally embraced and uniquely executed in his own right, while thematically reminiscent of 1920’s fashion-forward illustrator, J.C. Leyendecker.

Sprinkled throughout this book are his personal written recollections of working with each icon, as well as documentary style B&W photography with his subjects. It concludes with a section printed on vellum stock of his exploratory sketches. With a foreword by Christian Lacroix and an afterword by Dita Von Teese, this collection is as much a celebration of his hugely successful career, as it is a masterclass study of an art form that is matchless to conventional photography.
